Now that the 55 is driving, it's back to work on the 41 Ford. A quick background on the motor. I found a fully restored 221 out of a 40-41 sedan. It has a new stock cam with adjustable lifters. I am ready to replace the stock can with something else. Since I have a new cam, I would think it would be cheaper to just have it reground. I'm looking for some recommendations to a company. I know most major companies do it, but how many know the vintage motors. Any one here have a recommendation for my flat motor cam?
Berry Cams did two for me, very powerful mid range. Just what I asked for. 1-320-395-2377 Half the price of one new cam, 1/4 the cost of another.
I've used "Delta Camshafts" in Tacoma, WA. They did an "ISKY 1007B" grind on my old original Ford cam for $75.00. I also had them resurface my old hollow lifters. They do very nice work and are easy to talk to on the phone. They can do a variety of old grinds for you. Nice guys...nice work.
I, too, have had Pete One grind a cam for me. Great man to with whom to work and he really knows his "stuff".
The adjustable tappets you have now may or may not work. Ones for a stock cam had a shorter screw in them than the ones intended to be used on a regrind. To get the higher lift on a race cam with a regrind the base circle has to be reduced in order to get a longer tappet lift from base circle to tip of lobe. This usually means a considerable increase in the screw length not within the range of the screw in tappets intended for stock type cams. They'll extend out that far, but have extended to the point the self locking feature is lost. Also if they aren't already drilled, a 1/8" hole drilled into side of lifter bore from the center galley will allow use of a drift or punch thru the hole to lock tappet while adjusting. Much easier that using the s;panner that fits in the holes on top of tappet, which is a rel pain in the ***.
Pete did a 1007B for me that is being used in the 59A I have being ***embled right now. CAN'T wait to hear it idle.
