well today i got home from work cleaned garage up and started to think my 30 chevy is on the road again .... what next ??? started pulling parts out of shed so far i have frame from old t bucket - wheels ford bolt pattern 6" wide. front axle from swap meet- gas pedal -steering wheel - f-100 box and a vega box will see later what works best ....thinking of running a slant 6 but realy looking for a chevy 6...made some calls on rear end found a buddy has a 9 out of a truck also found way to wide thinking of s10 or ranger i have a 74 camaro 10 bolt has 272 gears ..... so what do you guys think so far any good words on steering or rear ends p.s pic is what im working with this car will be built on a real budget thanks mike ostrom
the seat is only in place for some test driving . it will not be used . build thread coming soon like real soon lol
Mike, that looks like 3 times bigger pile than I had when we started. I used a VW steering box from a bug ( small, light & easy to convert to center steer. An s10 or ranger with 3.73 gears is a nice starting place. I used a mustang rear with a traction lock and 3.73 gears with my Chevy 194 & PG. Looking forward to your build thread, lots of pictures please.
well i just got a buddy of mine to jump onboard he donating a slant 6 and we think a 3 speed ... found a radiator thats small and clean looking has a nice little elc fan on it ....... having fun already.. having wife download a nhra rule book tonight
Welcome to the insanity Mike. Looks like you have a good start. Looking forward to watching your build.
Mike, build your driver/cage as per ALTEREDS, FUNNY CAR -- 10.00 seconds ET and Slower from the rule book and you should be fine at any NHRA sanctioned track out this way. Do pay extra attention to the 3" Helmet measurement as the track tech's are getting hard on this rule. Remember you can build a 5 or 6 point cage, just tube size difference. You are on your way, good luck. Were in AZ are you?
[brad chevy] the dog never leaves my side lol thats a real shop dog [old28] i looked over the rules in the nhra book im thinking of going with a 6 piont cage found a 8.8 on craigslist for 150 and has 5 lug axles and a 308 gear tracklock will see if he still has it when i get off work tomorrow ...im in buckeye az west of phx
im going to pick up the motor this week end will let you know if i will be needing it .if you lived closer i would just pick it up for a extra. looking for some front wheels and something cool for a gas tank this week end is a swap meet will see what i can come up with . the rear end i found on craigslist was sold .... still looking but theres alot of mustage guys in town i will fined one
Mike, most of the late 80's - early 90's that had 8.8 rear were 4 bolt, some rangers, mini vans & broncos had 5 lug (4.5 pattern). Most all 8.8 and s10 are C-Clip and not real good for drag racing. I install eliminators on mine to get rid of the c-clips but they run $140 a pair. You might want to look at an 8" or a 9" as a better rear end. Another SDRA HAMBster out west would be great, happy collecting!
ok checked out some rear ends today and got a question what do you do with a 9" or 8" or even a 8.8 when one axle is longer then the other how do you center the rear end ... my buddy picked up a 8.8 one side is 2 1/2" longer then the other it came out of a 96 ranger ....
The sides are longer but the U-joint is centered. The longer axle is to allow for the offset of the pinion gear. Just mount it with the chassis centered between the ends.
{64 dodge} i will be out checking rear ends out in the am thanks for the heads up ....... the slant 6 will be here in the am .. going to tire shop going to pick up some rollers 235X75x15 still looking for front runners thinking of something around 24 tall
MOPAR centers the pumpkin and the U-joint is offset. Ford centers the U-joint and the pumpkin is offset. Regardless of how the rear axle is built, center it in the chassis so the ends of the axles are equal distance from the frame rails. If you use a MOPAR rear axle you can offset the engine and transmission to line things up and put a little more weight on the right rear for traction. We're running an 8" Ford in ours. They are easy to find, parts are readily available and they are more than strong enough for our cars.
Well HELLO Jamestown!! For myself, you mean.... I am currently trying to get the last customer car finished and out of my 1 car little shop at home so T can continue on my T roadster... New chassis, returning to a simpler, basic type Hot Rod.... A ground up Re-build of what was once a 427" small block powered Lo 9 sec streetcar... Will return as a T on "A" rails, 283..... Whenever that starts I will post...
Mike I would try to get a rear end that does not use c-clips axle retention. I think both the Ford 8" & 9" are a good choice, don't know about Mopar but I am sure they have one also. Set up rear in the chassis just like (64 DODGE 440) Tom said and you will on your way. I am running early Ford spokes with motor cycle tires 22" tall on the front.
Looks like what I have been looking at in my workshop for a few weeks ..... NEVER PLANNED to ever have a tube chassis under our Opel ..... but as the saying goes.... NEVER say NEVER!!!! Also.... NEVER have done the kind of work needed to mate this tube chassis (originally built/used under a Vega) to our Opel Kadett. Measurements (wheelbase, width, overall length, etc) are almost identical. So in that regard I am off to a good start. So like you.... I am in the thinking and daydreaming stage.... not such a bad thing for now..... after all..... "this is how it all starts"
ok guys swap meet was a good one ...... so heres the list of what i have pics to come later 2x3 frame front axle and spindles with hubs .. front shocks and spring i found a vw box for $10 then found one for $2 then found a box of them for $20 slant 6 is a 225 and looks to be a good runner crome valve cover and all came with 3 speed trans ... dragster steering wheel ...also found aluminium seat with cover .cooling fan for the radiator with chevy nova radiator... gages oil water and tech and my buddy thats going in on the biuld with me has a 9" ford out of a car we think it has 355 gears needs spooled same bolt pattern as the 6" wide wheels i have hes giving it up to get this car on the track ...so with that said we have everything we need to start thanks guys for the heads up on the rear end and the steering box pics coming soon i just had to get online and update . we are already having fun just picking up parts lol .........p.s.roll bar tubing 1 1/2 mild steel will be here this week sometime will be doing a 6 piont car thanks again guys
Mike, That is what I would call one hell of a great swap meet pick. Some real nice finds. Good choice on the 9" (more swap meet stuff out there for them & better gear selection). Spools, even used ones are pricey, might be able to find a nice posi that will work. Can't what to see some pictures. Need to build a second car for your buddy so you have someone with a like HAMBster to race. You might start a trend in your area.
ok heres my loot cant realy see the rear end but you guys know what a 9" ford looks like .. ..as for building another car we are already talking about it ... after all we have a extra steering box and all lol so later this week we will pick up some 235x75x15 tires used for rollers for rear and still looking for front wheels my spindles are small bolt patern chevy car havnt found anything small and cool looking ....
