One offshoot of all of this activity was the Meyers Manx-Vair, which were basically Corvair powered Meyers Manx buggies. Con-Ferr teamed up with B.F. Meyers & Co. in 1968 and produced the chassis for Manx-Vair kits, which had special body modifications to accommodate a complete Corvair rear end (engine, transaxle and suspension) and could be ordered for either Corvair (CC serial numbers) or VW (CV serial numbers) front suspension configurations.

McQueen kept over cooking the turn and stunt driver had to do it, though not sure where the final shot appears in the film. They kept this scene in (an out take really) and it was a good choice by adding more realism. Detectives are not typically perfect drivers. Well...maybe Jim Rockford.

Really agreed. The edgy sense of realism, IMO, is what makes "Bullitt" an enduring classic, regardless of film genre. I think the viewer IDENTIFIES with McQueen's character during this climactic chase/dual more in than 99 percent of other movies. You're constantly aware that if he wipes out, he's dead. He can't leave any card unplayed. He pushes his car beyond any reasonable limit (knowing that a dropped driveshaft, e.g., means death), because he has no other choice. He must run, waiting for the right time to turn the tables on the bad guys-- all or nothing.

Even more amazing in that this movie was produced in the pre-computer-generated SF era! I honestly believe this is a better movie for that.

"Bullitt" was released to great acclaim in 1968, winning an Academy Award for the fast-paced film editing in the big chase scene (which had required three weeks to stage!). I point out 1968, because it's just one example of how Ryan allows us to stretch the HAMB limits a little, and within reason. The occasional griper not withstanding, I think (deduce, guess) that Ryan has eased the guidelines for this particular thread because it's a formula that works, for everybody. If you go back through the thread, you'll see that Ryan does, indeed, pay attention, occasionally editing or deleting posts. But, for nearly three years, we've been given rein to self-police. For the most part, it's worked, and it can keep on as long as people don't post stuff that's ridiculously new.

buddy you are dead on on this..i hate these computer gen.car scenes. hell they got cars flyin in the air and landin and keep going without a scratch..lol reminds me of the dukes. thats one of the reasons i hated that show!!! but in this movie it was REAL!!! the car was being pushed father than it should have ever been.

Witness,these CLASSIC grab snapshots of hotrod life from a few decades ago! They capture the spirit of what hotrodding was like in the beginning. God bless Eastman Kodak for putting easy-to-use cameras in the hands of the common man and woman. And bless THEM for getting these snapshots, many of them positively unique.

With ya, Outlaw. "The Dukes of Hazzard" was, IMO, a larger-than-life, live-action cartoon, produced during the over-the-top '70s. It was unreal, escapist entertainment, full of steroetype characters. That's not to totally condemn it; it WAS entertainment, after all. You can't help but HOOT when Bo and Luke vault a creek, in slow-mo, and you SEE the Charger slump when it hits the ground and the hood actually buckels, YET they keep right on going! LOL

"Bullitt," on the other hand, is a movie that was well-written and cast, well directed and cut, requiring producers with faith in the project (of which McQueen was one!). In these times of over-statement, I'll still pick "Bullitt" as one of the near-PERFECT movies ever made -- better than "The French Connection," better than "Vanishing Point." One reason it's so riveting is that it's more than just an action/shoot-em-up. There are twists and turns as McQueen unravels, layer by surprising layer, "who done what -- and why."

More importantly, to me, it's a study in human motivations -- good and bad -- and it's a troubling statement on the toll paid for striving to stay on the right side. (Eastwood deals with this later, too. Very much like post-traumatic stress.) At one point, Steve's girlfriend (played by the GORGEOUS Jacqueline Bisset!) worries aloud that he's becoming just as "cold" as the baddies he's after. After McQueen waxes the last bad guy, he comes home to find Jackie asleep. Exhausted, he looks at himself in the mirror, then STARES at himself in the mirror, clearly troubled by her earlier words -- maybe knowing she's dead right. Wow! Movie magic.

Myself, I believe that McQueen's on-screen stoicism was probably mistaken for lack of acting breadth and depth, probably costing him support among the (voting) purists in the "Film Community." It's a crime that he didn't get an Oscar for "The Sand Pebbles" and at least a nomination for Bullitt. One thing about it, though, Steve McQueen was his own man, nobody's puppet. Screw awards, eh?

Merrill Madsen of Minneapolis owned this car. Madsen also owned Madsen Chevrolet at 5245 Lyndale Ave So in Minneapolis prior to WWII.

I found this photo of the used car lot at Downtown Chevrolet in Minneapolis. Interstate 94 goes right through this entire site today. Warren Cadillac is in the upper left hand corner of the photo. Warren later donated his building to Dunwoody Institute.

This photo is of the new car storage lot for Downtown Chevrolet. I'll go out on a limb and say this was 1957
