BTW, I quote an episode of This American Life in this article... If you have any appreciation for stories on any kind of level, do yourself a favor and listen to this one.

I think you made the wise choice in the direction you're taking the Rivi.

When I was a little kid, I brought this Grand Prix kit home from a shopping excursion with my Mom... my Dad was disgusted! I didn't know no better-

    Ryan,

The Riviera has always been one of Detroit's most iconic pieces of "rolling sculpture". The symmetry, balance, and, flow, of that machine directly-from-the-factory is almost perfect...and, it would take a lot to ruin it. It's almost fool-proof.

So, whatever course you choose, you will have a solid, torque-laden, road worthy, classic ride to be proud of.

Best of luck with it...and "goodbye" to Iceberg Slim !

I was just considering the same ideas on a 78 coupe deville I just bought. The biggest hurdle is trying to turn out the hot amish chicks around here.

    Pimpin' ain't easy.

Morty's Riv in the new RJ is utterly fantastic. Can't go wrong if it's anything like that.

I like the thought process. It's still getting wires right just not 13's? Any 60's Ferrari needs spokes so if where talking that game I think that's a must. Would looks great with mile deep black paint and those silver spokes. Black or green or butterscotch interior?

I think another interesting change would be to swap out the steering wheels for something that's close but maybe wood grained but that would be if the interior matched the idea.

I'm just letting my mind run free, I'm sure you've got this all figured out. I would be lost with one of those cars.

I've had several old Rivs,it's hard to screw one up.That being said, you can spend a fortune on subtlety. But in the end, make it your ride.

If young Ryan could afford Borranis,he'd have a Dino attached to them ,too.McClean may be more acceptable and in the budget.

So true. No way in hell I could afford Borranis... BUT, Borrani is interested in helping me out on a set so long as I can figure out the hubs. More on that later...

What? You don't think I'd turn a bitch out? :)

    .........

On another note, I did get the exhaust done before sending the old girl off to paint and body. I've been a life long Brockman Mellow Tone guy... I just love those mufflers. This time, however, I decided to support an Alliance Vendor and order some Porter Mufflers. I got the 26" jobs in stainless... I paid more than twice what I typically pay for a pair of Mellowtones, but I really like the sound. It's mellow and not at all obnoxious, but sounds like a pissed off motor boat if I hammer it.

    Pretty much perfect.

I know you want to stay true to your "poor half Mexican, Texan upbringing with a white collar effluent twist (did I get that right?)" but please don't have Borrani make a set of 13's! 15's please....the way god intended.
    BTW, do you mainline Thompson?

  22. I was so looking forward to 13" wheels, curb feelers and a bobble head dog in the rear window! :D HRP

I know lots of folks that think 15" wheels are borderline too tall for Rivieras... I'm not one of them... I'll be running 15" wheels no matter what they are.

Ryan, since I have been reading your stuff here for quite some time.. I gotta say, it seems like like recently, say the last year or so maybe, that you have really come into your own as far as the writing goes. Its like you are more comfortable in your own skin, so to speak. I like reading your stuff man.

Im excited to see the evolution of your Riv.. Play on Playa.

You should read The Jalopy Journal book. It's the best automotive writing I've ever read, but I guess it's not really "automotive" writing either.

Thanks fellas... But I disagree. In fact, I'd call myself a complete hack when compared to the REAL writers of our genre.

I'm an absolute car guy. I mean... I'm not a very good "people person" in any way, shape, or form. Even so, I'd much rather write about people. It's a weird rock and a strange hard place that I find myself in on an almost daily basis. Sometimes, I kind of feel like some cars are too good for words. Past my family - I've never found that about people in general. People are strange fuckers... and fair game.

That's interesting on both accounts. The Borrani's AND the exhaust. I need to put some mufflers on my '35 and I really wanted some Porter's due to their great feedback. Where do you get brockman mellowtones?

I was going to bring up Morty's car too. IMO Skylarks are the ideal wheels for that car.

But then, I know your opinion of my taste in wheels, so I guess they're out.
