Vintage shots from days gone by!

Am I seeing double?

Could this be like so many other movies where the action moves fast, and the filmmakers sub a wrong car (but generally simliar-looking) at one point or another? Sort of like a stunt man subbing for a star. Examples that come to mind: Lincoln for Merc in "The Long, Long Trailer," Camaro for Challenger in "Vanishing Point." Other HAMBers will remember other movies where this has been done.

To be sure, the Ventura was a 2D and on the shorter Nova wheelbase, while the LeMans shown was 4D and on a midsize wheelbase. But my question stands. And, I did watch Director Freidken's comments, and they don't definitively answer the question.

 

Maybe this will help to clarify things a little. A passage from Wikipedia:

"The chase sequence ['The 7-Ups'] is located near the middle of the film: in it, Bill Hickman's car being chased by Scheider. The chase itself borrows heavily from the Bullitt chase, with the two cars bouncing down the gradients of uptown New York (like the cars on San Francisco's steep hills in the earlier film) with Hickman's 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville sedan pursued by Roy Scheider's 1973 Pontiac Ventura Sprint coupe. While Scheider did some of his own driving, most of it was done by Hollywood stunt driver Jerry Summers."

Without looking any further, it does seem that cars from two different movies are being discussed. The LeMans was in "French Connection," and the Ventura was in "The 7-Ups." Nothing really to debate here.

And to think, it started when I praised "Bullitt," a movie much closer to the HAMB era.

Slightly off topic, maybe, but I like the discussion about the Ventura and the LeMans. I'm personally happy they made the Ventura and the Omega. At the track where I announce, we have an overabundance of Chevies. A couple of years ago while I was getting the info from a new competitor, he told me the car was a Nova. I said, "Nope, it's either a Pontiac Ventura or an Olds Omega, take your choice. We got plenty of Chevrolets."

 

Yes, I must apologize. I thought we were talking about the picture from the 7-up's.

...and here's exactly how the competition for cool show cars heated up between GM and Ford: That's Ford's head of Advanced Styling, Alex Tremulis, and his wife Chrissie in front of Buick's 1951 XP-300 Motorama show car at some event. Tremulis would end up designing many of Ford's Autorama show cars throughout the rest of the 1950's and into the early '60's before finally getting out to Bonneville to start setting speed records...



...but who's behind the wheel? He bears a strong resemblance to Harley Earl, who had sent Tremulis a ding letter right as Tremulis was looking for his next styling job immediately after Tucker.

After a couple years of reading this thread I finally have something to contribute. The town I work for is celebrating its centenial next year and today I was given a jump drive with a ton of old pictures. Here are a couple of my favorites.

My reply to the original BULLITT post meant to reference its overall cool factor, in big part due to McQueen's chase scene. I would prefer riding with McQueen than Hackman or Scheider. I'm just sayin'. Big thanks for refreshing my memory & clarifications on the Ventura/Nova.

 

We have a really cool post up today show A Missouri State Highway Department Line Painting Detail on Route 66. One of our readers also found us a photo and info all about the painting truck on the right w/a 288" wheelbase.

 

I don't know how to upload a video here but this is a film made in the 1930s that you guys need to watch.

In the film you will be able to witness some extraordinary scenes showing the pouring of huge iron and steel castings.
Also featured is the art of forging alloy steel to produce the many high-strength parts needed in locomotive practice.
