OldIron, not to embarrass you, and please don't think you're being singled out. :) Though the pic of the Gardner roadster is NICE, but it looks to me like a NEWER pic of a vintage car, not a VINTAGE pic of a vintage car. Having spent a day looking for a vintage quarter-view of a later Gardner car, I can tell you that the cars are rare, but there are plenty of VINTAGE photos of them on the internet. You just have to spend some time. This thread has been very popular for some three years because it's about VINTAGE SHOTS FROM DAYS GONE BY:cool:, not new shots of vintage stuff.

The newer pic of the roadster needs to be deleted. Likewise the discussion of what Woody Guthrie's political bent was. We don't need to rehash a post that's months or years old. Moderator MetalShapes -- just days ago -- stressed two key elements of the HAMB policy: NO religion, NO politics. He definitely reminded and clarified, he also made it quite plain that he, Kevin or Ryan himself DO delete nonconforming posts, and yes, regulars have seen the mods BAN posters.

So, if you're new, or an occasional thread vistor, read the rules before posting. If you have questions, just ask. You don't have to take my word for it; Ryan has a PROMINENT post on the main page that you can read, and you won't have trouble finding MetalShapes' "friendly warning";) from a few days ago on this thread. If you just post away with disregard for the thread theme and/or HAMB rules, well, everybody's been warned.

SWI, RE posts 56,408 & 56,409, WONDER WHY:confused: our teachers HATED The Three Stooges when their shorts began to be widely shown on TV in the '50!!! At our school, you could stand in the corner -- even go to the principal's office  -- just for having a Three Stooges trading card in class!

    Hey, Dave (scrappybunch)!
I didn't know these pics existed! Pyts hiding them away until his 100th birthday?
Brings back great memories of an old car club, the Bel Airs, and the great guys who belonged to it. Jimmy Catrone and I founded the Bel Airs in Linden, NJ back in 1975, and had over 30 members at some point. It was for 55-57 Chevy owners, even before the National 55-57 Chevy club was founded.

For spectators....from New Jersey, anyway, this shot and the other wedding pics were taken at the wedding a member of the best 50's and 60's band in NJ back in the late 70's, 80's and beyond. Doug Stackhouse, from "Greaseband" asked my club to drive our cars in his wedding, and we obliged!
Some of the other shots happened at probably the best concert I had ever attended. It happened only twice, at the Great Gorge Playboy club in West Milford, NJ. The cars parked on the ski slopes and on the huge deck of the club, they had the greatest musicians and groupls from the 50's who were still playing in 1980 or so. I mean ALL DAY LONG! over 8 hours....Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jay and the Americans, the DUprees, Impalas,Harptones, Shirelles, and on and on and on.
Was anyone else here at that show?

Ron, nice view of one of these Checkers with the retractible roof! We've seen other pix of them on this thread, but this one (I think) is a first-timer.:) Couple of questions:

Did Briggs build the bodies? Something about them seems to indicate that. And, how did they work? Hydaulically or mechnically?

And, just asking for an educated guess here: Suppose DeSoto started doing their "California Top" as a gimmick to compete with Checker in the livery trade???

Doctor Ed Garten of Hinton, WVa, posted this keen pic from about 1918 on a site called AutomoileandAmericanLife, blogspot. He said he thinks it's the first Hinton Ford dealership, and the forerunner of Hinton's long-time Garten Ford dealership. He ran onto the photo in a book, History of West Virginia, Old and New (1929, The American Historical Society, Inc. Chicago, and New York, Volume III, p. 597). The pic was accompanied by the following cutline.

“W. Shad Peck, has been for the past ten years the progressive and successful local agent for the Ford automobiles at Hinton, the judicial center of Summers County, West Virginia, and here, in 1918, he erected his modern garage, with an attractive sales and display room and well equipped repair department, this building occupying the site of the home in which Mr. Peck was born, the date of his nativity havng been June 1, 1892.”

Doctor Garten added, "A photo of the side yard of the dealership is attached and, along with a few new Ford cars and trucks, is shown the dealership’s tow truck . . . I have learned that the dealership existed from 1918 until the beginning of World War II when it ceased operation. My grandfather Garten then revived the Ford franchise in Hinton in 1946."

University of Dayton History Professor John Heitmann posted this photo on the aforementioned site, showing the employees of Garten Motors, Hinton, West Virginia, in the mid-1950s.

Also posted by Prof. Heitmann, this 1946 photo shows Carlos Garten, Hinton, West Virginia, Ford dealer, handing over the keys of a drivers' education car to the local school superintendent.

Nice, one of only 40 built DeHavilland DH.94 Moth Minor Coupe's. At the outbreak of WWII only a small number (less than 10) had been built in the UK. All of DH factory's were immediately employed with the production of war produce so the plans were sent to Australia(One wonders why?!).
A number were produced until the opening of hostility's in the SW Pacific, again the aircraft was put on hiatus while combat aircraft were built. Post war a number were then completed, making 40 in total, the above was completed in the late 1940s. (Exact year unknown)

Oh, and Ehdubya those are some of the greatest pic's that have been posted on here, I never knew those pictures of VH-UHH existed. Brilliant!

    Doc.

Here's one to get everybody's wheels turning! :D Besides the 1895 Model Colt Potato Digger 'chine guns, how many OTHER arms (including some WWI vintage) that these Coast Guard guys are brandishing? Ran across this on a cool site, G503.com. One poster there supposed that these guys are either on a port security patrol or aiding to impound Axis ships in the early part of the war. Either way, it looks like a staged photo-op with quite a show of force AND demonstrating the propensity of the Navy and Coast Guard to hold onto everything, old or not! :p Note the 16-inch blade on the bayonets.)

Leader Chevrolet, Springfield, Mass. While my father was looking at station wagons, my mother and I were checking out this conv. There was a promotion that day, and they asked us to sit in the car and have our picture taken. I was thrilled, and will never forget that moment. Since then, I've owned '55 and '57 ragtops , but not a '56.....YET.

    Another amazing HAMB moment

  15. Who knew...the CHMSL dates back to the '20s. If it was really all that frickin' effective, why didn't it become more popular before 1986? :)

Yes, I was just thinking about that , wondering if that car still exists.

EHDUBYA, thanks for enlarging the pic.

That dealership is still in the same location, but has changed hands and has been Central Chevrolet for quite a few years now. We bought a new Chevy pickup there in '93. The area advertises the "BIG E" ( Eastern States Exposition) near the "BIG C" ( Central Chev), which are close together.

    From "The oldmotor"[IMG]

"It appears the Fairbanks, Alaska had a bit of a flooding problem on August 17, 1967. The caption with the photo reads: ”Everyone thought this guy was crazy to buy an Amphicar when he lived so far from the water, but the thing sure comes in handy during a flood.”

1947 Studebaker woody station wagon prototype. The car was used by the Engineering Department as basic transportation, until the early 1950's when it was dismantled. In 1980 a restoration project was begun by members of the Studebaker Drivers Club. It was not finished until this year.
