Glass Thickness-- Fact or BS?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dan Hay, Nov 25, 2012.

  1. I had a new door glass cut for my 38 chevy by a mobile glass guy, when I put it back in the regulator, it's all bound up in the channel and the power window will not roll it up.

Upon further inspection, the new glass is 1/4" thickness and the old glass is 3/16" thickness. The glass guy says they don't make 3/16' glass anymore and I need to get new window channel to fit the thicker glass...

Is this true? Or is there still 3/16'" door glass available for a 38 chevy coupe?

I couldn't tell you if it's true or not, but it seems like the glass guy should kinda take the hit for selling you glass that doesn't fit your application.

  4. I agree, or at least let me know the difference when he was cutting the glass. The guy seems kinda full of shyte, so that's why I came here to ask.

  6. That's what I thought! But apparently, it's enough for a bind. Also, seems like he cut it slightly too big, it has no front to back wiggle room. Maybe he'll trim it for me.

He is full of shit. You can get it either way...he just doesn't want to fix it.

  8. I have encountered the same problem and all I hear is that they don't offer or stock the 3/16" glass anymore.

I had all kinds of problems. HRP

laminated glass? i saw a guy belt sanding the edge of a window for clearance.
tempered? if not,why not? you cant sand tempered glass, its too risky for shattering.
most side glass is tempered, single layer.
i had some glass done for a boat application last summer,18" square,3/16.including tempering was 45.00.it also needs a stamp showing its safety glass.

saying they dont make it anymore is B.S.
    he just doesent stock it.
glass is a huge markup,i guess due to waste and breakage, when i was cutting glass it was usually tripled from cost.
i want to replace all the glass in the studie,i may buy a sheet and cut it myself, then send it away for tempering.
biggest thing is building a bench big enough to set the sheet on.

  10. Just talked to Bob's Classic Auto Glass.... Helluva nice guy.. He says they do make original thickness glass and it's usually used for heavy equipment.. He said to call a local glass company and ask who does heavy equipment.. then call that person and they will probably cut a pattern. He said heavy equipment used the thinner laminate glass.

Great info, Next time I'll call them first! As far as my glass goes, I'm going to have the guy trim it a little, I think most of my binding issue is because it's to tight.. hopefully a trim will work and I can call it good.

Why did the numskull put the 1/4" glass in knowing that it needed 3/16" glass. Should have waited for you a change the channel. Rather than break something else.

I,ve been in the glass business for 40 years, I can get 3/16" & 1/4 "lami. or tempered, from any wholesaler. However I think your binding is more of a size problem than a difference of 1/16" in thickness.

  17. This guy knows his glass. He's cut two of my cars glass and will be doing a third one soon. He has custom makes them tempered or laminated and has over a 100o factory templates. He also polishes all edges!!!

Where I am the thinner laminated glass (4.3mm) is special order and hard to find. 6.3mm is the standard. It is regular plate glass with a membrane between - hence the additional 0.3mm.

My question is shouldn't you be going for toughened. Pretty much standard glass which is cut to size - 3,4,5,6 & 8mm plate glass is all available - then effectively heat treated to render it suitable for side glass.

I just had some done for the truck in my avatar (5mm) and it cost about 30% more than regular laminated cut at the corner jobber glass store. I provided a template in thin MDF. Took about a week.

(apologies for all the metric, but I'm sure you'll figure it out)
