WOW, what a step back to high school! Jacked up 4 doors, Catherine Bach, Auto Buff Magazine, Gremlins with wide Bias plies, Feathered Hair, Spray bomb flame jobs...
I think most of my friends had air shocks &/or steel pack thrush mufflers from K-mart on everything then. Aahhh... the good ol' days! I'm actually building a '69 Tempest for my kid right now. 14X10 Cragars on the back, maybe I can talk him into putting fog lights behind the grille & trailer marker lights on the rear axle. Or was that just a southern WI thing?

Cool! I don't remember much from the show, just that I was in awe of all the cool rods and customs that were there. I had flown in from Manitoba and stayed with my aunt & uncle. That was the first "major" car event I had ever been to.

  23. Had to have granny glasses and several 55-57 chevies and/or a Pontiac or two.
Glad I have the photos because I really don't remember much of it. For the yellow 57 chevy I built a 11 to 1, 327 with a 310 degree Crane cam [gasp!] that shook the fenders at a stop light..ran headers and purple hornie header mufflers...no tailpipes.

  25. One would think that Arlen Ness would have been associated with a Sporster not a van. :D

    Or maybe a Knucklehead.
Doesn't he still have a chopped 56 Ford pickup that he's had forever?

His son owns that van now. I have always loved the look of that van and thought it was very 70's looking. Probably had a couple of cool bikes inside.

For starters, Ness took the '77 Ford van down south to the absolute master of the top chop,
Dick Dean. Dean removed a straight 6" of roof height. Then, Arlen hauled it back to the Bay Area, where Rod Powell stepped the frame 8", and sectioned the body another 6".

Arlen himself, along with Bob "Mun" Munroe handled all the interior modifications to the dash, "doghouse", door panels, seats, and all the related components like the gauges, steering column, garnish moldings, and the factory A/C unit to fit the new low body profile.

From there, it went to Jack Hagerman to get its hood louvered. Next, it was shipped to Kenny West's shop in Fresno, where its rear door panels were louvered, the metal flares were constructed, and a power sunroof section from a Thunderbird was grafted into the front roof panel.

After all the mods were done (all in steel, mind you), Ness sent it to Paul McElly in Hayward for the bodywork and paint. The van was flawless when Jeff McCann and Dick DeBenedict did their pinstriping and gold leafing on it. Danny Grey handled the entire custom interior.
