Does anyone on here have a tube bender in the SF bay area? I need to bend some 1-3/4" DOM .120. I only need to make two "J's" and one "U" few bend. I've got a bead roller you can use if that helps at all. Can anyone help a brother out?
If it comes down to it , I can get the same material down here and ship the pieces to you saving you the h***le of sending long tubing. I can do 1 3/4 x 6" radious. Be careful of shops using JD2 benders as sometimes they flatten the outside of the bend. Always have them do a test bend first to see if it will work for you.
Darn, I was thinking a jd2 would eventually be a good unit for me. I've got a friend with a hausfeld but he's just too busy these days! I will keep your offer in mind if it comes down to it. Thank you for your reply dreracecar! I was thinking about where to ask around in my area. Maybe a handrail type shop? Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
A tube bender...? Are those that up here in Maine we call Zumba instructors...? Type "Zumba Maine" in any search...
I have a JD2 bender and make a cage every few weeks for people. If you are flattening out the tube on a .120 wall, you got a bad die. It doesnt like thin tubing (like exhaust) but I've had mine for a long time and if you stay in the specs/limitations that they give you, I have had zero issues.
Yeah I'd like some free **** too. You pay for the equipment and I'll just use it when I ever I need it. Sounds reasonable to me.
Come on now, I'm not a total scammer. I did offer use of another exspensive tool! I'll pay in cash or beer as well!
JD2's are Ok to use. I also agree that if you get a flat spot, the DIE is worn. Its a shame your on the left coast. I have a new JD2, with a new 1-3/4 x 8" radius die, new enerpac P80 2 speed pump and 10" enerpac cylinder mounted. I would sell the whole unit for dirt dirt cheap but shipping would kill us both. PM me if interested.
I been doing this for a long time i have never, ever, heard of a 'worn out' die! Bender dies do not wear out. Zuma Instructors, thats funny!
My bender runs with Hosfeld dies and it bends with the same quality as a mandrel bender even with .058 chrome moly, I get some cars in here and can tell they were built with a JD2 because of the deformed bend. Will it happen on a piece of .120 dom. , I dont know , thats why I said to do a test bend.
Bender dies can wear out. The good quality dies that are designed to protect against flattening are made to capture the tubing tight before bending starts. Once a die has been fed dirty tubing or just overused in general, it will no longer capture the tubing tight. Therefore a worn die allows the tubing to expand on the sides and flatten on top and bottom.
Huh, never thought I would learn anything when I started this thread. Makes sense to me realkustom. Anyone know of a place I could pay to get 3 pieces of DOM bent up? Structural iron shop? Zumba instructor? Local fabricator?
Here is a qwik and dirty 1-3/4 x 6.5R bend showing how the tubing rides on top of the die until tubing is forced in. After the bend, I have to force the tubing out of the die because it "captures" it (180 degrees around tubing). If the tubing rides loosely in a worn die, it can flatten out during a bend. Your results may vary.
i have a bender about two hours from you, only have a 1-1/2 die but i can get my hands on a 1-3/4 with a couple of phone calls. if you feal like making the drive i will bend what you need. jeff
btw, mine a jd2 and i dont have any problems flattening out the tube. the only issue that i have is that the followers tend to leave marks in the tube unless i polish them up and lube like crazy. i just need new followers or some delrin ones.
Right on Jeff! If I cant find anyone closer soon, I will certainly give you a buzz. Thank you for your help.
Come on down to castroville.... Irvan smith bender, 13/4 dies.. Any time. Leftturndave@aol.com 831-262-7294 Dave
I see why you are called an ***, Tommy.. because you are a ***hole.. the poor guy was just asking for some help...way too many ***es on here..
When I purchased my tube/pipe/conduit bender the man I got it from told me to put oil on the mandrel some where around every 3rd to 5th bend that was made. He said "" This will keep the die from wearing out". The next instruction was "oil the ratchet and keep the dies clear of trash" This was in 1978 or 1979..... I would say that over 100 roll cages have been ***embled using this tool........ I have loaned it out for friends to build roll cages only catch is I go with it....... I don't like to lend tool's. If you were closer I would be glad to help a member of this board.. Bobby..
I got help from a super cool local guy. I appreciate the leads and advice fellas. Thank you to the guys that offered help even though they were a couple hours away. Thanks again John! See you at metal meet! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
