Identify this engine Please

I am trying to identify this old 4 cylinder engine. It is an overhead valve
engine. The only Identification that I can find is a logo that is cast in to the block and head. The logo is a large S with a F inside the top loop of the S and Co. in the bottom loop. I will try to attach a photo or 2.
Any help would be appreciated.

last photo looks like someone crafted an overhead oiling system for it. Also noted is that the rocker arms and valve stems don't see too overly fond of each other's personal space.

 

Is there any markings on the block?

Can't help, but I did notice how far the rockers are off from the center of the valve tips ?!?!?!?!?!

 

The only markings are the S F Co. cast in to the block. (Photo)

The rocker arm assembly and overhead oiler assy is just sitting loose on
the head.

What markings are on that generator? Interesting setup.

Looks British or French, for whatever reason.

 

The metal tag on the generator is unreadable. The info appeared to
have been painted on rather that engraved.

Nonetheless, that does not explain how far off they are - look at first two on the left of the photo....no amount of installing/tightening down on the shaft is going to cure that offset.

 

Kinda looks like an old borgward engine

 

It is a rare Sanford and Fitch racing engine, used @ indy and daytona in the mid '40s.

There that'll get you back up there.

 

racing engine with a dynamo/generator? From the looks of the grime packed on there, I'd guess "teardown" at the end of the season was not part of the plan?
And I'd think Fitch would want at least as large a billing for his F as Sanford has with the S. Some kind of car or pickup engine, nathan's suggestion of Borgward seems a lot more plausible than the Indy suggestion.

 

It does have similarities, but many differences also.

Ahh, that's the pushrods on the other side.

That is why it is a Sanford and Fitch and that grime was because during the war they didn't clean the brickyard, gas was rationed. And anyone that could operate a broom was busy building bombs.

 

I think we need more clues. There also looks to be some sort of i.d. tag riveted on the crossmember.

 

Someone knows what it is if we can just keep it on top where they can find it.

 

The brass tag on the front crossmember is stamped 6962.

Definitely out of some sort of right hand drive vehicle judging by the clutch shaft sticking out of the right side of the bellhousing.

 

It,s LHD , No big deal, just a Simca France engine. Simca 5 was a French Topolino. Simca 8 was a little bigger than the 5. Then there is the Simca Aronde with the souped up Rush engine. This looks like something inbetween. Bet Metalshapes knows.

 

Must be the serial number.

Yeah, i did a bit of google searching but could,nt find an exact match either. There is a Simca 6 as well and i completely forgot about Bluto,s knowledge of the the little French cars. Sorry about that Jim.

 

I am amazed by the depth of knowledge of HAMB members. I have not heard of
some of the engines that you talk about.
I suspect that someone will identify this creature.

Given the physical size of this engine, is it possible that it was used in a truck rather than a car?
