Colliers and Saturday Evening Post. Not too exciting for a boy, surrounded
by WWII vets, full of war stories! Given that most of a boy's life was routine,
men's lives the same -- ho-hum -- so COVER ART sold millions of magazines,
right? Just as colorful Reynold Brown movie posters sold a ga-zillion movie
tickets. Point? The CONTENT of mags and movies very often fell far short
of what the cover or poster depicted!!! LOL. Ever get a magazine home, or
to your tree house, and wonder WHERE in the book was the story described
on the cover? Walk outside a movie theater, stare at the poster and feel
you'd just been scammed?

nah i know who joan worley was, i thought this was the girl who always danced with goldie hawn in bikinis and was all tatooed (fake ones) but i have been wrong a couple o' times in my life ! LOL

Old-timers over that way say that this was taken by a newspaper or magazine photographer who was in the area to help cover the feud. They wanted to simply pose, but he wanted as many guns in the photo as possible, according to the story.

 

Another shot for the Barbera Eden fans among us ... a few years before I Dream Of Jeannie.

 

BigJohn, I believe you have it right. The Hatfield-McCoy Feud was bad, but the eastern press dramatized it the way TV magazine (even "news") shows do now.

The Matewan Massacre was much worse, IMO, in terms of bloodshed and cruelty. And, as I recall, Devil Anse Hatfield or another family member said he himself killed two or three men calling themselves "railroad detectives." Slaps on the wrists all 'round.

 

Spotted a few other goodies in there too, Jowett Javelin by the sunshade, not sure about the next one,.The roadster could be a Jaguar XK with a Morris Oxford behind it with the boot up. A Standard Eight 2-door saloon looks nice with a don't know behind it and what could be an Australian bodied Austin Eight Tourer behind that. another Austin, an A40 Estate could be next and right at the back I'm guessing could be an SS100 Jaguar. Coming back down the other way An Austin 16 and a Morris Z Van with windows, the Club Coupe already identified and finally how about a Lanchester. But I could be completely wrong

 

jowett definitely, i dunno what with artillery wheel and distinctive bonnet (Aust; hood), door wrong for an XK so - i am guessing - the Mk XXs had some DHCs or maybe a Talbot, then an 48/215 or FJ Holden i think next.
furthest back seems to me too big and bulky for an SS100, the last, though, i had initially thought that was an Oxford, but thats just wrong, and i still doubt it's a Lanchester, but then again, like you said ...

 

She's a QT! Remember when she did this show? I don't actually, except in rerun, but I'm old enough to have seen Jeannie in primetime. I know what Andy is thinking, "Whoa!". lol

Interesting advertisements that are only a few months apart.

The Sedan is a Fourth Series Eight and the last to carry the drum headlights. The drum head lights were gone for 1929.

The convertible is actually a Third Series Eight. Note the long hood and the six lug wheels.

P.S. You guys probably won't believe me but my Dad actually pulled the stunt that they are talking about here in these lines from the movie. No kidding! He's passed away now. He was WAY out of control as a kid and for most of his adult life. He was a guy just like one of these guys. I miss him sometimes.
