    Hey guys,
I ended up getting a really good deal on a freshly rebuilt 305 and an NV3500 5 speed from a buddy of mine. So ive decided to run with this setup instead of going the crate motor route to save time and money and move my project forward. Plus, Ive read some good things about the NV3500 tansmissions and using them in hot rods. My powerplant will not be a speed/torque demon so Im not worried about it not being able to handle the power.

My questions are about the NV3500, Ive never messed the swapping over to a 5 speed, anytime Ive messed with them it was factory and everything was hooked up. So if somebody could give me a little insight itd be appreciated!

    1. What are some things I need to know before hooking this up? It came with a clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, spicer trans yoke and hydraulic throwout. So I believe I have all the parts Ill need?

    2. If I need to get new parts i.e clutch, pressure plate, flywheel....what model do I order these for? My buddy thinks the transmission came out of a 98 1500 silverado, but wasnt positive.

    3. From my understanding, the hydraulic throwout takes the place of the slave cylinder and clutch fork correct?

    4. I am purchasing a brake/cluch pedal assembly from kugel with clutch master cylinder. The throwout has two lines connecting to it, how does the plumbing need to be routed? One line from pedal to throwout and the other line from thoughout to reservoir for return?

    5. The transmission has a couple electronic plugs on the case. What exactly are these for? Reverse lights and clutch safety switch?

Sorry for all the questions, Im just trying to get an understanding of this transmission before I tackle it. Thanks in advance!

You should be able to ID the trans year by getting some numbers off the data tag. The transmission needs GM Syncrimesh fluid or one of the approved Penzoil/ Royal Purple / Amsoil approved alternates. Flywheel needs to match the engine. Clutch can be replaced by size / type. The biggest potential land mine is matching the clutch master cylinder bore size to the HTO bearing. You need to know the make of the bearing and what master cylinder bore size it was intended to be used with. 99% of all HTO bearing horror stories are cause by this mis match.

    1. once it's in as a unit you should only have the normal hookups to do. Throttle, fuel system and clutch hoses in this case along with the cooling system hoses.

    2. Since you have to pull it apart to check the clutch disk, take the disk and pressure plate along to the parts house you deal with and set them on the counter and match them up. You know that it's close to a 98 and has a 305 so that's the starting point.
As Jmountainjr said, you can get a lot of info off the id plate on the trans and possibly off date codes on the engine.

    3. Correct. similar with same end function but different.

    4. Check a Chevrolet pickup service manual for that info. you might find the info online.

    5. I'd guess got the reverse light correct, not sure on the second one but that may be in the ball park.

if at all possible, use the factory size clutch master, lines. Like Jmountainjr says, you wouldn't be the first guy here asking why the clutch doesn't work. An 1/8" bore change makes a huge difference.

It should take the same clutch from 88-98 305/350. I used an 11" 1988 style clutch, flywheel, single rear seal 305 with a saginaw 4 speed from the 70s. went together fine. 10 spline i believe.

It needs a 168 tooth flywheel, 11" clutch from a 1998 C1500 2WD 4.3L, The hydraulic throwout takes the place of all the old stuff. Unfortunatly the OEM one has these weird press lock fittings, so you have to run OEM style clutch line unless you do this.

buy this fitting, press the roll pin out of the stock hydraulic throwout and you can run standard line instead of the modern Push lock stuff. will help with throwout issues.

  11. Most. If not all, NV 3500 transmissions came from the factory attached to V6 motors? If you use a V6 flywheel behind a V8 motor you will shake and rattle but you won't roll very far?

Incorrect. They were used on 5.0l silverado 2500s and 1500s. Dodge rams also had them in v8 applications.

  13. look at the link toreadorxlt gave you, I did not have the throwout bearing and had to buy a new one. It came from a 2004 GTO you can use AN fittings no special stuff needed. But with you having the throwout already use the fittings from jegs. I used a wilwood slave with a .75 bore works great.

  14. Have a friend who thinks he has a 3500 behind an 8.0L in a 2000 1-ton dually. Aluminum case, integral bell. I don't believe any of these came in anything with a mechanical speedometer, so one of your plugs is speed sensor.
