I'm looking for what ever this machined looking material is. Anyone know where I can score some of this stuff? And how about the chrome trim? Wanting to use it on my door panels and maybe then some. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Machine turned. I've seen the trim somewhere,,possibly something you can get from a automotive upholstery shop. HRP
most likely stainless, brush finished with something like a scotchbrite pad check out a Mcmaster-carr catalog for single small size sheets. alloy 302 -316 would be a good guess oops, now i see the engine turned look it has, same thing though. you could put a circle of scotchbrite on a piece of wood rod in a drill press
Okay. Thanks! I think it would make some good door panel inserts. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
In Australia we call it engine turned stainless sheet, you can reproduce the look on mirror finish stainless but it is time consuming. I used a 1" isolation rubber mount with 1/4" unc studs bonded into it, use a sharp knife to cut the rubber in half, cut some 1"discs from 600 emery cloth and super glue to the rubber. Stick the threaded end in your drill press at low RPM and overlap each circle by 50%. I tend to mark out the area with a half inch grid pattern as a guide to get a nicer job. As I said, time consuming but looks good and doesn,t cost a lot. Cheers Ty
here is a link to one source. Be prepared for sticker shock on the flat panels though. http://www.fpmmetals.com/ I picked up what amounts to an engine turned decal on Ebay to do the dash for my boat tail roadster with but I don't think that would hold up for door panels very well. It wasn't very spendy though.
Actually available done on vinyl by the roll, tinted in different colours, check your local sign/graffics shop.
If Im not mistaken you can get a trim like that from Clayton machine. He is the one usually at the Goodguys show in Nashville. I will see if I can find one of his brochures.
I would like to touch this stuff and find out what it feels like. I'm finding all kinds of material in different thicknesses. Some stuff has adhesive backing??? Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Might be what I need to do. I also may do a bead roll type insert. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I just want something decorative on my door panels. Something to divide two different fabrics maybe. For a Model A coupe. 50's inspired.. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
you can do this yourself. just need a drill press, a wooden dowel, and some time. sand the aluminum with some sandpaper to remove imperfections. mark the pattern you want with a sharpie, and start turning with the wooden dowel in the drill press. take your time and you are golden.
that's a 58-60 Corvette door - go find one and see what it is. I believe it is stamped thin-gauge metal that has been embossed with that pattern.
BINGO ... or call me stupid also if we are both wrong!Dodge/Crysler/Plymouth used the hell out of it in the late 50s early 60s
Mylar is a Dupont family of plastic sheet products made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It refers to the kind of plastic resin used to make it, not the design on it. It is also known as polyester film/plastic sheet. One could have any number of designs on it, including machine turned/engine turned.
Yes the question is "what is this material called" and not "what is the pattern (design) called". I worked in an upholsery shop years ago and we called them "mylar inserts" when on the door panels and sewn into the seat backs.... irregardless of the design. BTW I have alot of family in Conway, nice town and surrounding area.
If you want the shinny stuff that comes on a roll, call SMS in Oregon. They will know what you are talking about. I`m sure they have diferent styles to choose from.
Spradling makes a upholstery vinyl by the yard that looks similar that might work for door inserts Softside style APX-2551 Steel Silver
Great Lakes Fabric has a similar look in stretchable vinyl and looks great .... www.glfi.com It's called "carbon fiber",and is available in copper /black/and silver/and several colors.....
Mylar is correct. I called SMS and they are putting together some samples for me. I guess this stuff comes in all kinds of apps. Ribbed, flat, ect.. Can't wait to feel and see this stuff.
