Hi all. I am building my '56 Ford Truck. I am building a 292 to replace the 272 that hasn't run in 13+ years. I want to do it traditional style. 3 dueces on edelbrock manifold, aluminum finned valve covers, Distributor that looks like a magneto.

I plan to run the generator ( maybe alt & a/c later. its a big window and it's hot here in Cali. )

What should I run for exhaust? Sanderson headers or rams horns

    Any other idea's welcome.

The Ram's Horns are definitely cooler looking. Hang a set of glasspacs or Smithys behind 'em and let her roar. Someone is making an alternator now that looks like a generator, it's advertised in Street Rodder mag.

rebuild the gen, it'll last ya. Ram horns are expensive, reds or sandersons both make nice headers. www.ford-y-block.com has all the parts you could dream up. -the catholic

Since late Y Blocks came with an alternator it wont look out of place. here is a link to using a GM style. I used hollow tube sections over a long grade 8 bolt to give it a better look and lots more reliability once I had the dimensions figured out using the threaded rod.

Prices for a good set of headers or RAMs on Ebay/swap are about the same, choice is yours. I used rams on my 54 since I found them on the same 64 F600 292HD I used to build the engine.

Y Block rams horn are probably the most beutiful exhause manifold ever produced, expensive though. Alternators look icky.

There's Reds on here but we ended taken them off and rewelding the whole thing. Ram horns if you can grab a set look awful nice.

I've been running Reds Headers for five years now and they still look and sound great. What happened with yours?

  14. First off, any Y-block's going to be "traditional style". I agree ram's horns look great, but they've gotten so expensive ... Anyway, the stock dual exhaust manifolds have a nice look anyway since they're of the upswept design to go along with the Y-block's exhaust ports. Depends on what your putting it in, though, and the overall look you're after.

Ram horns are good looking....if you can afford and find them. I'm running the same thing Goober is. Except mine still have the stock rust on them! :D If you don't have this type already, they're easy to find. I've been wondering about the various types headers also.

Basically, we got them and from the get go (not to be confused with Geico) they didnt seal right. Well, the car is driven once in a while, and after blowing 2 sets of gaskets out, and them still leaking/ticking we decided to investigate. Pulling one off, and placing them on glass, the surface was not flat at all! 1 of the end ports had its big boogered welds sticking out while the others were ground flush. Bunch of grinding and being put on a planer at a local machine shop later...it sealed like a charm. Reinstalled it, and fired it up to realize that the passenger side had the same problem, but not as severe (couldnt hear it over the drivers side racket)

Over the winter I will take it off and go through the procedure again, but for the money we spent for them quite frankly don't think I should have to. I could have welded with more precision on my shitty MIG.

And yes, IMHO alternators do look icky...but not as icky as being stranded on the highway @ 3 am when my generator decides its through with life lol...its alot easier on kustoms cause we have hoods, the hot rod guys have it alot tougher, cause the world can see your running gear.

Watch out for port matching if you will be using stock car type dual exhaust manifolds as there are 3 seperate versions matched to their heads.

    1. Peanut valve heads as used in the 54 Merc & 54 Ford Police package.

    2. Virtually all 4bbl power pack (Interceptor) as used on 55-6 272/292/312

    3. Big port heads starting in 57 such as the ECZ-G, 113, etc.

    4. Car duals will not work on trucks, big time interference on drivers side. Rams or headers only.
