As far as the "reposting and inane comments" are concerned, I don't mind going through some of those to see the really neat remarks some guys come up with. Sometimes it gets boring when a whole batch of photos is reposted, but that scroll button is very handy. If I don't care for a post, I use that button. Speaking as primarily an observer on this particular thread. I've been chastised for reaching too far into the 60s and 70s on a thread I started, and I accept that. I love this website, and I'm happy to abide by the rules. Let's don't overcomplicate it.

    This should really be deleted.

Or maybe it should stay up for a while, to show us that there was a time when it was OK to be a wife beating piece of shit...

Amen, BigJohn.;) It's about the most eclectic thread on the HAMB, so not everybody is going to like every post, obviously. Given so many individual tastes, this thread will never be perfect. You said what Mazooma said long ago: If someone doesn't like something, SCAN ON; they're sure to find something else of interest. Mazooma added another piece of wisdom. People work hard and invest time to get material they hope will entertain, inform and stimulate nostalgic and historical conversation. So, if you don't like what's posted, instead of throwing rocks, try putting in some search time and contribute some posts yourself. I.e., do something to make the thread better, okay?

And rest assured, recent events are clear evidence that Ryan and the other hard-working moderators can and will edit or delete anything that they feel doesn't fall within the rules and spirit of the HAMB. (And, when they see a long run of photos quoted, when the quoter really only wants to discuss ONE pic, the mods will eventually devote the time to edit that sort of issue. I think they realize that a lot of us guys/gals aren't all computer whizzes.)

We're all in it together, so we need to be reasonable, sometimes even tolerant.:)

MetalShapes, funny that should show up. I think the original publisher really was hoping to make a point, probably that some damned old-fashioned attitueds toward women were still around!:( Sheesh. But, either the newspaper editor missed the mark, or we're not seeing the Letters-to-the-Editor that almost certainly ensued! Whoa.

Me, I don't think this one serves any useful purpose.

    You are probably right...

Other than maybe realising that the era we use for inspiration car wise, appearently also tolerated behavior like that.

Well, to be honest, I think we guys tended to say the things our
buddies wanted to hear. But when we got our girlfriends alone at the drive-in most of us remembered that you get more bees with honey than you do with vinegar. If ya know what I mean. LOL:D

To be fair, maybe those guys in the news article thought the same thing. I didn't mean to judge 'em too hard, 'cause I wasn't there. BUT, I sure would like to see those Letters-to-the-Editor that followed!

A "gasser" was a name deriving from the early days of drag racing when most cars competing on the drag strip served as regular transportaion vehicles. Some became so modified that they were no longer street legal and had to be seperated from the more sedate street legal counterparts in order to acheive a fair and equitable means of racing. A gasser quite often meant that the car was stipped down of excessive weight by various means; removal of bumbers, seats and other extraneous components and either left omitted or replaced with lighter one, IE fiberglass hoods, trunks and fenders. And of course the engines were heavily modified featuring various means of induction, multiple carburators, fuel injection or superchraging. In most instances an OHV valve V-8 of some make replaced the original powerplant. The Henry J's were very popular for this type of racing class because they allowed for the installment of bigger engines with minimum modification required of the engine compartment. Henry J's were somewhat light and featured good rear wheel weight transfer that leant towards better traction. In fact I suspect more Henry J's have been found abandoned in a state of having once been a "gasser" than a stock production model. And that Bill is in essence what a gasser was.

In the late 40's to about 1950 or so, my dad was a civilian fire fighter for both the Air Force and Hughes Aircraft. In extracting pilots and crew from burning experimental jet fighters etc, he would have to don those bulky silver fire suits with the bulky helmits. While the early ones were lined with asbestos, the later models had another less harmful material. What reminded me of this is seeing the purported experiment of having water sprayed onto typical municipal fireman. They did the same thing with my dad and fellow firemen, saturate them with water as they entered the fire. I cant recall the specifics, but somehow he felt that the water did nothing to supress the heat. And mind you this was before re-breathers. Though gas masks might be worn, they did little to reduce the heat of the filtered air being inhaled.

There sure was some pretty wierd men out there back in the day. Spank her to control her. Are they serious if so that explains a lot of the screwed up history after the war. Maybe they needed wooden clubs.

No, lived in Calimesa until I moved to Reno/Sparks Nevada in Feb. of 2005. I never thought I would move away from California. I lived there when it was great, but, too many people, congestion, and
bad attitudes drove me away. Still go down and visit friends and relatives. Nice place to visit.
I love living in the Reno NV. area now.

The way it used to look! Orange groves before urban sprawl. The mountain in the center is San Bernardino Peak east of Redlands CA. San Gorgonio, southern California's highest mountain, is in the distance on the right. UP photo ca. 1940s.

    1953 Cadillac Le Mans
“Fueled by the space race, designers channeled their passion for aerodynamics in everything from trains to pencil sharpeners. The 1953 Cadillac Le Mans is no different. With expressive fins, chrome plated grill and famous Daomar front bumpers, the Le Mans served as a preview for upcoming production Cadillac’s and a favorite on the Motorama show circuit.

Sold to actress Marie McDonnald, The first Le Mans show car was immediately redesigned to feature 24 karat gold plated trim, thirty coats of platinum dust to the body panels, as well as adding a radio-telephone and cocktail bar to the reupholstered red leather interior. Destroyed in a fire in 1985, only a handful of parts remain of the original Le Mans showcar.

The ones that keep breaking the rules have been warned many times - They must think that since the H.A.M.B. is about Traditional Hot Rods and they have heard stories about how badass Rodders were back in the day that they don't have to live by the rules here
For them we'll all go down in flames
