You had wire hubcaps on your coupe at one time and still thought you were a STUD...! So I don't wanna hear it.

That was thirty years ago, they came with the car,I'm cheap, and five spokes were a lot harder to find back then. I still got them somewhere if you want to use them on a pink roadster.:D Give me a shout and we'll make plans for the Hot Rod Reunion. All the cool kids with hot rods will be there.

I think the coupe turned out OK in the end. The HRR sounds like a must attend show for the summer, count us in. We'll bring the "Travlin' Fruit Stand"

That roll bar just looks bitchen without the top. You just might have to live to love the two. It's one of those thangs. Hell, when your behind the wheel and the top is over your head, don't think about it. The top is kool and the roll bar sets the car off. KEPP EM BOTH. Just my 25 cents.

Yeah, the roll bar has been there a long time. Not sure when it came into the mix, but it's tied into the frame real nice and has been part of the car since the '60's anyway. So it will be staying.

I doubt that but he would surely take his turn with the jar. ;)

  10. Nice!

My opinion; just put something shiny on it and enjoy it. returning it to it's former glory would be a long and arduous task that would take you down many unforeseen roads, do that only when you are ready.

Thanks for all the opinions guys. It's gonna be hard to let it sit long enough for some paint and repairs, let alone a total reincarnation....

We know for sure that other than the color, it has been in this exact configuration for at LEAST the last 45 years. That's long enough for me to say it's pretty legit.

I'll keep adding to the history as we go.....

You need to remember that its your rod now, the history and provanance are a great thing to have and use but your just the next page in the cars history. Preserve some of it add your interpretation to some of it. It will be one of the coolest rods in Ooltawah any way you do it!

  13. Kev, I gotta tell ya that when I looked at buying the roadster, it was that roll bar that killed the deal. I just couldn't wrap my head around it at the time.

Stupid , stupid, stupid... (insert sound of me banging my head on desk here)

What the hell was I thinking???

My vote would be to lose the roll bar, recreate the hood sides and exhaust (with the extra tube for the nailhead), then paint it shiny black.

Or just leave leave it alone, drive the wheels off of it, and have one of the coolest cars on the planet. :D

Thunk, Thunk, Thunk...(more sounds of me banging my head on desk)

Sounds like you need help....

  15. So I have spoken to Charlie Hall and this is what he told me:

Charlie made the pipes and hood. The hood was made out of 34 Pontiac hood sides with model A or 32 hood tops.

car used to have a riley 4 port in it but they could never keep the car running right so the riley came out and the flathead went in.

Bud and his brother bob were partners in the car. Bob knocked up a girl and had to marry her so Bud took over the car and moved to LA and that was the last time Charlie saw the car.

Charlie painted the car for the brothers and the pink color you see is actually Kaiser Frasier Indian ceramic.

The car never had a roll bar and no special rear end in it like a Columbia or quick change.

Bud's dad name was Eddie who owned Eddie Poorman auto service at santa rita and 6th street and Charlie's shop was next door.

The car had a 39 ford gear box in it.

Charlie said at the time him and bud and jimmy castle and ted gay were all doing hot rod stuff there were no hot rod clubs. You just had a group of guys you ran with and that was good enough.

Charlie is going through some health issues at this time and at 89 as he says stuff is starting to wear out. Charlie would like to meet with me in January and I have promised to take the photos to him so he can see what the car looks like now. He can't believe the car is still around.

I hope this helps fill in the gaps a little for you and the direction you may want to take the car in. As Charlie says there was not a lot of car shows or magazines back then and the stuff that was in the magazines or shows was all in Socal. Charlie is not sure if he has any photos of the car but will look though his books and see what he can come up with and have it ready for me in January when we meet in his words” I want to me with you in January if the man up stairs does not need his hot rod fixed first. Charlie also asked the I do not give out his number or address since he is not feeling well so any other questions or other request please contact me and will see how Charlie is doing in January.

Hopefully the Hot Rod Gods won't call for Charlie any time soon....

Riley 4-Port, Kaiser-Frazier Indian Ceramic, '34 Pontiac hood sides, car went to L.A. with Bud after brother knocked up girlfriend....

    I'm liking this.

HUGE thanks Ron for all this info.

I can't believe you haven't been Kevin, it's at the top of my list every year!

If you're coming bring me a couple extra jars - you know how I am with that shit. :D

  20. But I'm still not as cool as either of you guys.

Damn, just when you thought your knew who your friends were. Looks like I better be sleeping in the coupe, with one eye open, when at Autorama this year.

Love the details coming out on the roadster Kevin. This things gets more "lust-worthy" with every little bit of history that is uncovered.

Somehow I've missed the Hot Rod Reunion, gotta change that. I'll fill your order before we leave.... ;)

I'm really hoping that we can turn up a few more pictures from the past.

It's gonna be hard to sleep in both cars, and you'll be passed out anyway... I'll see to that. :D

Damn Kevin! I just read back through your thread while I was waiting for you P.M. That is awsome! PLEASE do it in Coral! Please please! That is such an awsome color out of the fifties that no one does these days. It's NOT pink!
I'm proud to have been of any little help in this deal, and I'm glad the right people hit the scene.
You know, the funny thing is, I remember a picture of the car in it's 1976 livery somewhere either in Street Rodder or Rod action at the time. I'll do some digging if I have some time in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the help Chip. I'd love to see those old magazine pics if you can find them.

By the way.... I have a "Pontiac Guru" hot on the trail of a set of '34 hood sides. I'll let you know what we find.

We had a great time at the Chattanooga World of Wheels. The locals seemed to appreciate and accept the Traditional Theme very well. We racked up the trophies. 8 trophies combined.

Just as we were about to go up to receive our swag.... A man walked up and changed everything (I thought) I knew about my car.

Bruce Young from Chattanooga, Tn. pulled me to the side and said that he started building my car in 1953 and drove it to City High School in 1958. I was skeptical of coarse, because we already knew where this car came from and who built it. Right?

We were wrong. See for yourself and tell me what you think.

He came over Sunday and spent the afternoon with me and brought his lovely wife and these pictures. I made a few others at the show and while he was here.

Daytona Beach in 1959, Atlanta Autorama 1959, his Dad's house in 1958.

WoW show after he dropped the Bomb, and then the first time he has sat in the car since 1962 in my shop.

1977 and 2012 pics, just for reference.....

Wow! I was amazed at the first part. What are the chances he would even recognize it now?

    Very cool.
