Nice shot of Joe Winter. Few people know that Winter had but one leg, the result of bone cancer. He drove the car via hand controls. He ran with Pedregon for awhile as both were real low buck guys and had that in common.

Interesting that Joe Winters car looks a lot like the sit up cars of today.

This car held the NHRA MPH record in 1970 at 230 something. Henderson was the last name of the owner/driver I beleive.

Pedregon was one of the most bucks down racers the fuel class ever had. He was known to go and approach other teams to buy pistons they were about to dispose of. Pedregon would than proceed to doctor up the slugs and stuff him in his motor. A Jahns here, Venolia there and maybe a couple of Fordgetrue were resting in the motor. Man if he had won a big meet with contingecy money he would have done well with a sticker from every single piston manufacturer's product line adorning the side of the car.

the quality of the old drivers character, or
perhaps the strength of their drive, or
    the need for speed, or
maybe they just had steel balls:D

I've seen them throw the third member forward stripping all the bolts on the housing, I've yet to see something come out the rear (of a diff). If I had the chance I'd be in there in a flash, you'd have trouble getting me out at the end of the run!

I've seen the spider gear pin exit out the rear twice. Once out of an early chev under a Henry J gasser with an injected small block, and the second out of a big Olds under a Bantam altered with an injected big block.
Used to form an armor plate over the back of the housing in front motored slingshot cars. Cars today must have spools or something other than open differentials which were required back before sprayed on starting lines.

  17. I've also read of entire rear end housings breaking free and rotating in the drivers lap.

This happened to a Hybrid Ford 6 E/Altered based out of Nashville back in around 1972 or 73. He was a record holder and national event winner, however his name I can not recall at this point in time. (darn it)

  21. I want to say it happened to the owner of the Pure Hell Altered? Rich Guasco?? If I remember correctly, it broke away, spun in his lap, and had him sidelined for like 2 years.

I've also heard Sorokin did too, but I can't guarantee that.

Its Joe Winter's top fueler. He lost his throttle leg to cancer but continued to race with hand controls, thus explaining the reason for the then bizzare seating height. Winter also teamed up with Frank Pedregon for a breif spell before Pedregon quit and Winter ventured off to funnycars.

A broken rear end killed Sorokin at OCIR in early December 1967. It let loose as he was at the 1000' foot mark. It was the eve of guys slipping thier clutches to create the smokless runs that enabled much quicker ETS. Clutches and axles were coming apart.

I may be mistaken, but I think it also happened to Jack Christman. This was prior to him driving the Super Comet
