Thinking about buying 2 motors that have been sitting for a while, but the are supposedly really cleamn and might be able to get them running. I don't know too much about these but they are 1954 331's and don't have the water outlets in the heads, but they do have adjustable rockers and cool chrysler marine valve covers. Just wondering if I could make my money back if I can't find anything to do with them. thanks. Also, any other good parts on these, I think the intakes are 2 1 barrels.
Is this 800 each, or 800 for both? The only desirable part there would be the adjustable rocker gear, ***uming they actually have them. Despite some claims, the bumps on the valve covers are not an accurate indicator of their presence. Lots of covers got stamped for them, but not many motors got adjustble rocker gear. If they have a bunch of gear drive stuff on the front, they are hard to convert for p***enger car use. yes you can convert them, but if you are going to try to sell them and make money, you wont make enough to justify your time. one motor also may be reverse rotation. 800 for both. thats what I was afraid of, I read that one is reverse rotation in a book and they did come out of the same boat. Also, it does have adjustable rockers for sure, how much are those worth? thanks for the info...
I'd guess the rockers are probably worth about $200.00 a set..it cost about $250.00 to get 'em bushed and the shafts hard-chromed. You can but converted non-adjustables for a little over $400.00 but most guys do the adj. pushrod deal.
Since one is reversed, buy them both, put them together and build yourself a twin engined dragster with them ala Tommy Ivo.
I've heard that marine cranks won't accept a harmonic balancer, but i haven't dealt with a marine hemi before. That would raise the cost or reduce the price considerably. There would be a # of things that could be parted, rods, main caps, valve covers, ect one of Bob walkers old print catalogs lists a pair of 54 heads @ 300$(sounds high to me). decisions decisions
for the reverse rotation eng.,just pull the camshaft and subs***ute a "Normal" one,ie, an automobile cam. rusty
It Is not the harmonic balancer that is the problem it is the fact that the step for the timing chain isn't there. Also the blocks coolant p***ages are different. On a marine motor the transmission attaches to where the harmonic balancer goes on a car. Also there are no belt drives. everything is geardriven including the water pump and the generator. my suggestion is sell it to some one looking to restore and old wooden boat and buy a car blocked motor. I happen to have an old 57 Century in need of a motor. RAW4MRW@Charter.net
It does a good job illustrating how the cost for parts/pieces has gotten out of hand - adjustable rocker sets for a couple hundred?
