TuckerFan, I think you're absolutely right. I honestly feel that Alex (designer of the Zephyr, et.al.) loved his DeSoto CYCLONE lines so much that the concept stayed in his brain, to emerge when he was called upon by Preston Tucker. As you know, he -- and others -- transitioned Lawson's earlier concepts into what we now remember as the Tucker 48s that eventually emerged from the factory, albeit too late to save the company.

On short notice, I could not find a partial overhead quarterview of the Tucker 48, BUT, even looking at one of Lawson's original renderings (below), one can surely see strong similarity between the Cyclone and the early "Torpedo." For one thing, the rear of the final product (which I love, except for tail lights) is somewhere between the Cyclone and the Lawson Tucker Torpedo.

TuckerFan, do you have in your files an image of the Tucker 48 from about this angle, so that we can all see it for comparison against the CYCLONE design???

One amazing thing about Lawson's renderings, to me, is that he was trying very hard
to makePreston Tucker's early ideas work -- "extreme" or not. Specifically, those swiveling front fenders! Thanks to the site Kustom-O-Rama

These were AWESOME cars, at some $3,750, only the Chrysler LIMO was more costly for '49! Wow, how much is that in 2012 dollars?

Only a thousand were built. At that price, no wonder!

 

Just a little flat-hatting, showing off to the troops... nothing wrong with that, eh? Actually, there was. So many 50's jets were lost to pilots goofing and hedge-hopping (doing low levels over the spouse's or girl friend's house at lunch, flying under power lines or bridges, doing low level ACM with another pilot) that the US military had to ban it. A lot of farmers were pissed, too, when the cow's milk went sour and their herds were scarred crazy. Gary
