Anyine have a color picture of this beast? Looks like a black vinyl roof but body color? Need to know.

  2. The body colour was metalic gold.It may have been a 1967 Mazda colour.Google Spy Machine race car.You will find colour pictures. It may take a bit of searching.

HRM cover, July '58...story is only 2 pages and does not indicate who did the paint or stiping, nor does it indicate who did the chassis, for that go to the Fuller page on Don Ewald's site...yes, it was Fuller's first car...body was fiberglass...according to the story Bob and Don Zeller, and Jim Burrell were the owners, from Burbank, and the legendary Max Balchowsky built the Buick, 338 cu in, Isky cam, etc, ran 137 at 10.80...

I remember seeing the car the first time Ivo was supposed to put his roadster engine in a dragster, so when I got to San Fernando I thought this car was Ivo's...but wrong, Ivo's car had just rolled out of Fuller's shop and was still unpainted...later in the day the two Buick cars raced and Ivo won, guess it was his first of many dragst er wins...later Ivo ran his engine in the daddy's auto body car, which Don Johnson drove...later Don Johnson ran the "Beachcomber" top fuel car...would love to know what happened to this car...

Well I saw a photo of Airline Auto sales given as a raffle prize at the Dec 5 TwiLight cruise night at the NHRA Museum. Wonder where they got the photo? I personly don't know who took the picture nor does Herb Ries who owns the picture I posted on this site. I know, once on the net it belongs to everyone. But please give Herb the credit for still having the photo and WCD for identifing most of the cars let alone the location of Airline Auto in that picture......

  15. Winters had a prosthesis and I think it was above the knee and drove this car with hand controls. I'm not completely sure but the odd loooking cage may have made it easier for him to get in and out of the car.

  16. One of my favorite "transition " cars, Richards Nova was built in SoCal, then he moved to Oregon. The car was raced extensively on the west coast, it ran low to mid nines. Remember that 1966 was the year the tube chassis all glass Comets were introduced, they were running low 8's by years end. I saw this car run many times, it was absolutely gorgeous! Richard ran a Camaro FC after this, then on to AMC wheelstanders. He passed away last year, a great racer and a good guy.

  17. Kent Fuller watches the Bev's Steak House car at Woodburn ( sans nosepiece) in about 1966. After the car's destruction, it was rebuilt as Ron Salisbury's Rumbler. That's no burnout, no slipper clutches yet, guys burned the tires ALL THE WAY down!

  18. Bob Hightower out on Jerry Ruth at the 67 March Meet. Again, no burnout, just tire smokin' runs! Ruth held the NHRA et record in this car.

  23. This is not the car he sold to Shoe. This car went to Buckeye Racing, then Bob Cain, then Rodlyn Knox.Leal was having new blown car built late in 1968,and decided superchargers weren't for him.Shoe bought the car.

On 4 car drags at Minn Dragway above.

Notice there is a guy on each side with his hand on the rear of the car. He was to watch for red lights. Really crude and many arguments resulted. Cars were squirly and sometimes got into each other's way. There were line for disputes. Often settled by reruns we all hated.

I had a 283 HP 57 Chev and got into it with another guy. How we missed I dont' know. Maybe I was far enough ahead but our tire tracks were side by side. The dispute was 2 part....who red lighted and whether I was leagal or not. It nearly came to a fist fight but the track manager John Foster stepped between us. I had already been given the trophy so I put it back on the table and said "You all know who has the fastest car here so here is the second place trophy, you guys fight over it."

'And that's the rest of the story'.......:D

I've never seen anything like this. Most of our tracks were too narrow any way.
What was the purpose of running more that 2 at a time? Speed up elim's?
