im just driving her about stock at the minute, iv got a few other projects on the go. minor work will be done soon like, removing the fenders and fitting different lights, but major stuff should be happening next summer... hopefully.
haha yeah, thats be ol' Southwold. i need a head as mine has cracked and been welded at somepoint, but weeps slightly. iv got a 10hp motor in there at the minute so was hoping to find a 8hp head to up the compression a little. don't wanna spend loads as the little motor only really needs to last me till the bad weather has gone. this is great fun to drive, i especially love the brakes or more to the point lack of.
Too be honest - your Y looks cool as... I'd sort the brakes, pop in a mild 100E engine and scare the beejeesuz out of everyone. Here's Odgie's tuned 100E lump
i have been toying with the idea of just tuning a sidevalve, with aquaplane and home built parts. it just seems really appealing for some reason. i know it wont be major power but i think it'll have more sense of achievement, iv been driving it stock now so will notice any gains i get. and after all sidevalves are the original hotrod engines. i am slightly going off the idea of the roof chop, but then i still really wanna chop her haha. the fenders and interior will be going, as this will save alot of weight.
popped and saw Nervous today, absolute top bloke. managed to buy a new head off him too. iv decided on doing the 100e engine conversion, tuned with homebuilt and aquaplane parts, as i can buy any sidevalve parts off Bob. and once thats in, i'll start piecing together a V8-60.
I'm just diggin those Fisk tires. Hop it up, but don't molest this one. Find something else to chop. Great little car . 10 hp-seriously? Just go with a big Briggs and Stratton.
yeah i had to replace the tyres, but i kept a Fisk one to put on my garage wall haha. but that makes no sense to me, as i bought this car because its what i wanted to hotrod haha, why start with something rotten that iv gotta spend months repairing before i can rod?? yeah yeah i know 10hp! actually i just found out that mine is actually still only a 8hp! hahah. i have managed 50mph out of her! scary stuff.
Geez, last year I sold to a german guy for 500€ a perfectly good running V8-60 (Aquillon actually) for his Simca, I'd prefer if that engine ended up in a hot rod, even if it's a dwarf one.
your kiddin'!! i cant find one over here! yeah this is gonna be a baby hotrod haha although for the British cars of the time they where actually quite big compared to the likes of austins and stuff
Nope, not kidding you, the german emailed me 2 month later telling me the engine was in perfect condition: no noise, no smoke. For that price you can't even buy a complete bearing set for the Simca... You can find them on this side of the channel, but they are always in need of bearings, if you do buy one, get one that's complete, and be ready to pay top € to rebuild it, parts are hard to come by although I know of a guy whose got 3 or 4 twin carb manifold like the one on the Talbot.
id of ripped your hand off for it at that price. i was speaking to a chap today with a few 60's, he said that none of his had matching caps so were pretty much useless, and thats the main thing to look for. think ill just keep an eye out for a running mill, will be worth paying more for one iv seen running. will be an awesome little rod with a 60 in her i reckon though, just such a perfect size for the car.
Just be careful you don't kill the car. The soul only hangs around so long as most is still original. Lots of streetrodded 30ies cars out there which may as well be fibreglass replicas. Their soul is gone. The cars have become living dead zombies. That car has memories of 30ies Britain, the war through to the 1960ies. If you're perceptive you can relive those memories with the car. If you kill it you'll lose out on all that. The car can put you in touch with your roots, with your heritage. Stick to period modifications like solid steel wheels, an aquaplanned 100E motor and some hydraulic brakes. That'll make her nicer to drive but won't destroy the soul of the car. Ed
hi scoty, i've enjoyed following the discussions on your model y. i like the styling of the car and especially the grille shell. i'm wondering if you'd be willing to send me dimensions of the shell and how difficult it might be to get one. i think it might be nicer on the front of my roadster than the '32 shell that i have now. thanks, howard.
yeah, dont worry im gonna try and keep as much of the cars soul as possible, iv got an absolute passion for history, especially the 40s, even just driving the Y i like thinking of the family that owned it and how excited they would of been when they first got the keys, stuff like that really fascinates me (im a odd 21 year old, probably why i have no friends) the fact that this car has been through the war is such a big thing. im gonna try do the car up as i think someone in the 40s/50s would of, there will be NO parts on this car that were made after the 50s!! i have no real interest in streetrods i appreciate the work that goes into them but im into original styled hotrods. i just love the 30/40/50s era! i honestly feel as though thats where i belong, i love all the music from that time, the fashion and obviously the cars, no modern technology really interests me and i despise modern 'music' everything nowadays has no passion, no soul and really no real meaning, it sucks.
well after about 1600 miles iv got bored of the power of the 8hp motor haha. now building a 100e motor, its bored by 60thou, got bigger valves and a sports cam, im gonna probably skim the head down to bring the compression up a little. this will do me till i can fit a v8.
If you're lucky, you can get a reliable 50-60HP out of it! Get with Artiki - he built a nice 100E engine a few years back before getting bitten by the Model-A bug. But Nervous Bob and Belchers can sort it, no doubt. I may go this route on mine initially...quicker and easier than the V860!
yeah iv got Bob on my side yeah i want to put a v8-60 in her eventually.... but to be honest if i could squeeze 60hp out of the 100e mill, then surely this is gonna be quicker than a v8-60 as will have about the same power but weigh half as much... not forgetting will be much cheaper and more reliable.
hmmmm i do like it unchopped... im gonna run her unchopped and fenderless for this year, but come winter i'll probably start to chop and channel her, only thinking of chopping her by about 3 1/2" unsure about how to go about channeling her yet as iv never done anything like that haha
Congrats on your find, It's a pleasure to see one in that fine condition, always liked them. If you are determined to cut One Up.........buy a project car, and you'll have no regets. Just my 2 cents. If you will , Use this one as a driver, and maybe a V-8 60 would'nt be too BAD. (ha !).........Like to see you keep this one Clean appearance. Lots of Luck and keep Posting. Very Interested in whatever you decide. Hanging by My Thumbs, in Tenneessee.
