Val, A couple of years ago, I got a call from a guy about Jack and Randy Timmings "Picadilly Lilly" Austin 2 Dr, that they raced in the 60's. He said it is being restored, was just wondering if you remembered the car. I have a movie with it racing at Madras in 69.
Heres my pickup, really like the non gasser stance. Been sittig on it for 5 years but new workshop nearly done. Really want to do a stretch cab with dorset doors but just cant run to the ££££ for grp ones. Got some spares in a trade so have a plan I can afford. Torn between installing a small diesel for an economical run about or straight axle & blown pontiac 400 from my roadster, decisions, decisions !!!!
heres mine, prolly never get it to the gasser status, wish someone would take it off my hands, its super solid and complete, but a 4 door.titled.
Thanks! We rarely see any A10 Austins over here! Any idea what he ran for power? Did a little more work on mine today. I try to spend an hour or so every day upgrading or adding things. Put a E brake on it and sewed up a boot from black naugahyde to cover it up. Just got the carpet in last week. Had to sew it together by hand, as I do everything, since I don't have a machine!
The Grape ape Austin was owned by John lang at one time. This pick is from Lebanon Valley Dragway in upstate NY. I believe this is the run were the car went hard right after its launch and missed the wall by inches. You can see in the pick the right rear tire is off the ground. John is best known for running his UFO Fiat gasser at Nostalgia shows in the northeast. Haven't seen him out with the car in a few years.
It's either a '41 or a '46 like mine. After WWII they simply got the dies out and stamped out the '41 body for one year while they developed the new post War body style. They're a pretty rare version, and in the '46 only available as a 4 dr., while the '41 was either 2dr or 4dr. The one pictured does not have the original headlights, running lights, and those lower fender lights are not stock. Stock Lucas headlights were smaller diameter than those. I kept mine and retrofitted late model halogen sockets into the housings. These are the stock headlights and running lamp housings. Stock have the release underneath to open for lamp change. They weren't sealed beam.
The Grape ape car is cool! We had a chance to buy it a few years back... wish we did, didn't have the cash though! Here's a few more i dig...
No idea... But I'm pretty sure it's painted Red Now and it says Attack! on it... I'm Not really a fan of the lettering currently on it, but to each their own. I liked it as the Grape Ape. If i can find a pic I'll post it. It has the same wheels and stance and unchopped. Looks like the same car to me.
This car is listed as a 1947 Austin 8 (not a 10), all cars in the UK were scarce after the war they had to export most of them, thats why there are more A40 Austins in the USA than in the UK! there is only one std 2 door A40 Dorset on the road, and maybe 10 in all.
Surprised it's listed as a 1947, but maybe I can't see the split rear window. As far as I know the 1947 was the only year that had the small split rear window after WWII. There's a local guy here who owns a 1947 split window. I think the only difference between an A10 and an A8 is the engine HP rating. A '47 may well be the rarest of all Austins!
This looks like the pits at SIR down behind the starting line. The 683 number would indicate Div 6 as well.
I may be the last one to notice this, but are the PU and panel doors the same as the front doors from the 4 doors?
