Why do whitewall tires cost so much?

Just another skill that america has lost along with stone masions real carpenders ETC. But we are still good at selling crap.
Do these old tires have to be inspected by DOT or anything?
My friends cokers white portion have fish eyes in them. (Painter talk)

i agree.. my E-78 14" Coker whitewalls run me around $100 each.. not too bad.

 

i painted my fronts to make the real deal coker classic rears. cant tell from 5 feet. 1st set i used single stage urethane with flex agent for plastic bumpers, paint cracked, set on old rusty now are done in superwhite nason base coat no clear. look just dandy and noone has noticed excpt the friends who were there for the alteration lol.

 

rubber is actually white originally.

 

I recently saw Coker Tire featured on Car Crazy, and was very impressed with the production process. I tried looking for the video online but didn't find it.

The tires are made in TN, USA and require a serious investment in capital (serious machines) to produce. The tires are laid-up by hand and then pressed in a massive press. The whitewall is hand-buffed. All of this is done by American workers. I was impressed.

If you want a specialty product that is not sold in large numbers, you will pay more.

How many threads have we seen about "Buy American"? This is good information, to know that
they are made here by Americans.
I'm betting real soon, there will be Cheap foreign made crap WW tires being offered for sale here.
Am thinking about changing to WWs and I'll give Coker a serious consideration.

Hey Rock, it's just my civic duty.

 

Read an economics book..........there is an abysmal lack of comprehension of what it takes to run a business, by the public in general, and many of you guys in particular.

If reproduction WWW tires WEREN'T available there would be a chorus whining about "why doesn't SOMEBODY make WWW tires? I'd buy 'em"

So somebody does take the plunge and justifiably expects a return on his investment. And you expect him to make every #$@&^ obscure size and brand you MIGHT want and to stand behind the product. And he does and what does he get in return?

Interminable bitching by an undereducated and ungrateful public.

And, by the way, my comments are not in reference to Coker, but the industry in general. The fact is, I have never bought any modern WWW. I do appreciate that they are available.

i don't know why coker never responds to this shit. they have nothing to be ashamed of. they have invested a lot of money to design and produce a product for a very limited market. no one else has. they are american made, if you are buy diamond backs (though not fault of thiers) you are very likely buying a chinese tire no matter what the brand.

the folks at coker have done us a great service producing all the different tires they do. i hope they make a good living so they'll keep doing it.

to the origianl question, ever make a www tire from scratch? me either. bet it ain't easy.

Supply and demand. If people weren't buying them then the price would fall. Plus making them the way coker does is not cheap.

I understand that with all of the specialized tooling and processes, plus the limited market for the www tires, the cost has to be more. I would love to have a set of real www tires, but for now krylon fusion does the trick. Can't tell from a few feet away and I'd rather have fake ones than blackwalls.

 

I was seriously waiting for that thing to explode and blow his head off and lodge the spinning grinder in his chest. I've seen some stupid shit in my life, but that really ranks up there with the best of them.

Im betting the same guys that piss and moan about the price are the same ones who would be the first to complain if they were'nt available AT ALL.

Also, Id love to see the insurer of your ride when you go to make a claim and they see that the tire's sidewalls have been taken to with a grinder.

Who ever said playing with 80yo hot rods and kustoms was gonna be cheap ? Ya want cheap, build a POS "rat rod" we all hate so much. Or drive an 8 yo Corolla. Save $$$ in some places buy doing work yourself, then spend it on tires other parts where you cant.

You guys think they're expensive over there? Try buying them over here and getting ripped on duties, shipping and taxes !!

Coker and others are in BUSINESS. That means the laws of supply and demand play a part in determining the final pricing that a given market will bear for a product.

As well as profitability.
