582-590 6th Ave NYC, facing SE, 1948... 2009 or so... This doesn't seem quite right, Subway entrance would have been there in '48.
Back when a gas station still had service, I can almost smell the old gas fumes from when I used to pump gas.

Not necessarily, the MTA builds entirely new stations, entrances, and exits all the time. I would know, because they delay my commute on a daily basis.

That is a GOOD question. I have looked at the photo on numerous occasions and that had never crossed my mind. Anybody know the answer??????????????????????
When I was a kid working in downtown Vancouver (Canada) they operated these parking lifts. Each section (one car width was one section) was operated independently from the others and went an equal distance (depth) below grade as high as the parking station was above grade so the operator just raised and lowered the sections accordingly to either load or unload the vehicles. I was amazed at how well they worked and how reliable they were and seemed to never break down, at least I never saw one get stuck. The up-scale parking stations also offered car washing and detailing as well and most stations were used by business people who paid by the month for daily parking. Hope this helps.
That is also one of my favourites, I wanted to give those guys **** for leaning on my shoebox coupe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of them had lift platforms in the middle between the parking towers. The lift platform would carry a car up or bring one down. when the platform got to the position for parking or getting a car they would pull forward or backwards onto the platform. Really was quite ingenious. there are some parking platforms still being sold and used throughout the world today.
They went by various names. Bowser, Pidgeon Hole and Roto Park were some of them. Hopefully this link works -about 45 secs in a chase scene starts where they are chasing thru one of these garages while it is moving. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbq1UfRUQf8&feature=player_embedded
Cool pics, thanks for sharing. I like the billboard near the beginning "Fleischmanns- 90 proof for more enjoyment" and also the roadster wrecker at Cuca****a.
This one is about 3 miles from my house and is in the process of being restored: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/1223 Al in TN
Wow I love this page first the great shot of Mt Baldy down in Cuca****a. Now I just looked at the first pic in the original link and saw the Bomber Station down on Mclaughlin Blvd just north of Oregon City. I logged hundreds of hours in that plane. Tail gunner, Bombadier, Turret gunner, Co Pilot, and Pilot (when my cousin would let me.) Best part was I did it all with a pack of *****ies and a Coca-Cola. Still made it home in time for dinner and got my homework done
