My own thoughts would be neither.
I'd stick to the early 60's look, something more along the lines of a car you'd see tearing up the streets on a Sat night..
Blackwalls on chrome steel wheels, nice clean dark solid color and some heat under the hood..
Think of the 58 Impala that toad drove in American Graffiti...just in a dark coat :D

    just my 2 cents.

I think custom, not gasser. I would lose the skirts because those rear wheel openings have a nice shape to them by themselves and it will take away some of the slab sidedness. Chrome rims, narrow ww tires, and a nice paint job will really set it off.

The car has a lot of potential, but not as a gasser.

  9. I am with Tony on this one. Slightly down on the snout and clean as a whistle.

Used to be a real sweet Rootbeer brown one that ran around where I went to highschool. They can make a real nice street cruiser.

Back in the day the trick was to use a 57 hood to get the smooth look, add a bar grille to make the front look wider. give her a rake to the front, lose the skirts, add some chrome wheels and cruz !

Since you don't see many 58 fords runnin around why dont you make it a mild custom or street cruiser!

  19. Would be a nice tow car for the gasser you build. Just saying.

As much as I love gassers, I wouldn't gasser it. I wouldn't do a mild custom either. I agree with Don's idea of losing the skirts. I'd keep it slightly lower and mostly stock, except for some tires and wheels.

One thing I've noticed lately is that the guys building cars these days LOVE the stock look...I've read so many threads where someone puts up a pic of a stock '60 Pontiac or Chevy and the "awesome" comments fill pages...

FWIW, a "stock" car, to me anyway, is NOT awesome because I grew up with most of them...but to the guys "building" and driving them today, it's all new (prolly because the cars they choose were built years before they were born)...reminds me of the street rod movement back in the '70's...just about every rod built was a "resto"...meaning the outside was (almost) as stock as the day it rolled out of the factory, but everything under it was new and updated...

Just my opinion (and I'm full of 'em), build a knock-out kustom...and if you don't have any idea of what to do to it, go here to see my build thread of a kustom:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=329070&highlight=the+best+55+caddy+build

A "stocker" is just that...why build something that's already been done many times...???

  23. The 300s look best in black with a moonshine runner look. Sleeper, down in front a bit with a total thumper under the hood. Black walls and poverty caps. Show 'em NASCAR's roots....

It would make a very cool custom, Gasses look like four wheel mud cars. 40StudeDude has it right :D
