I have a 48 Plymouth delux coupe, and am turning it into a g***er. The front suspension was gone off the car when i got it. So since i want the front end higher than the rear should i use like a 2 wheel drive truck frontend or what?I dont want to use a solid axle style i just dont think it fits this style/ year of car.Any ideas for a suspension setup would be great. Hear is a picture of what im kinda shooting for.
Since you don't have anything to start with, go with something readily available. Now, do you want long travel available for wheel stand launches, or is this more about the "look"?
A g***er, or a sort of look kinda like if you squint your eyes g***er? The bodys a natural; for a straite axle. And ifin ya want to run with the NEW norm of g***ers your gonna have to get bottom of the fender higher than the spindle center. I dont see this happening without a stub frame and cut and relocated spindles.
That 'ol mopar with the megaphone zoomies was a product of the Ramchargers. The were a group of Chrysler engineers that used that car as a test "Mule" during the musclecar era.
The reason the G***ers used a straight axle front suspension was twofold. It was light weight and it was easy to raise the front end for maximum weight transfer when you launched it. A more modern suspension might be able to raise it but you still have the weight penalty.
I kinda wanted to stay with IFS, but yes it will add weight. And i want the wheel stand lauches. I have a straight from a 49 chevy truck and one from a ford if i was guna do a straight axle i would use one of those because parts are easy to find. I want the look of that g***er in the picture for the aww factor . And the car either getting a BBF 460 or a BBM 440 if i can find one.
Modern suspension and g***ers go together like Chinese food and chocolate pudding. I worked on a 55 chevy pickup that had a g***er stance with a custom built Kugel IFS. It really didn't look right. Especially since the truck came stock with a straight axle. Dave
