I was really surprised how much smaller that back window looked once i laid it down. Im very happy with the profile of the chop. Its really coming out just how i envisioned it.

The gap from the glass to the rear shelf/tray area?

im sure the gap that opened up is just a long cats eye shape thats only about 1.5"s across the center.

Yeah, i wouldn't have thought it to be overly big either, it will be an easy fill in piece for him, the proportions look spot on.

Hey Marcello, we need you to push it outside to take some better pictures for us now please buddy.

    Thanks i appreciate it!

I'll try and get it outside this weekend. With the little bit of snow outside my garage it'll be hard to get it back in. I have an incline leading up to the garage. Tires will prob just spin and i'll get stuck.

Being sick has slowed me down a bit, but im going to try and start some relief cuts today if i can.

So i made some more progress over the weekend. I realized i start school again tomorrow, so i needed to get as much work done as possible before i barely have time to breath.

Once i got the car outside i realized i really didn't like the slope with the way the window was laying down. To get the lines to work right i really needed to move the window forward a bit, and lean it a little less. So i took some angle iron and tacked it to the car and right below the glass, and used a second piece as a slider to move it untill it looked right.

Once i had it where i wanted it, i tacked the top of the window to the roof. I didn't put any relief cuts yet. It overlaps slightly and it flows almost perfectly, so im going to make up the curve with a little body filler.

Now im on to what seems like will be the hardest part for me. A nice flowing sail panel. With the shape of the stock roof, i have a bulging rounded spot to the rear of the back side window. There is a big X where it bulges[although its in dark marker on a black car]

Be carefull, you might need alot more filler than you think. And if not prepped and apllied well, in time filler is prone to crack and ruin paint. Just sayin.

Lookin good but like vonkool says becarful with the filler idea looks like it would take a good bit to fill that curve from the pics

Im not looking to fill the curve on the side of the window, i want to make that correctly. Its the very slight overlap where the rear window lays ontop of the roof.

Consider moving the back window forward about the amount of that gap you have in the pillar now, (about 4"?)
That will match up the crowns of the roof and metal around the back window better.

(and I still think you should flip the window upside down.)

Take your time double check all measurement throughout as it goes back together. set up supports inside so you can lsupport them as you piece it back together, try to make your cuts so that what comes out can be used to fill in the areas that spread as it goes back together. and above all have fun!!

The shape of the glass seemed like it would make it alot harder to get a flow w/o extensive metal work. and my experience/skill isn't there yet!

Im in currently back in planning and thinking mode. since i started my spring school semester [im in a part time 3 classes a semester grad school program] so most of my time will be eaten up. I need to have a detailed plan of attach and what i want to do so i can make the most of my time.

    here is the current overlap:

Just my two cents, the back window is to tall, it should be about the same height as the side windows. If you try to fill that gap with filler it may look alright at first but will crack and cause problems later not to mention the back window will still be to big.

    gotta love the helpfull suggestions
    :)

That window looks like it was made to fit the car!
Oh, wait, it was, and now it fits it even better. As for the gap, Thats about the same that I dealt w/. The fillers today are excellent and recomended for upto a 1/4" thick. I wouldnt want to go anywhere near 1/4" but Id say from the pic, your well below that.
Grind to bare steel and use a real good filler such as Rage Gold and you should be fine (just like mine has been for the last 5 yrs;-)

Like I said just my opinion, but then its not my car. I was taught no thicker then 1/16 with filler, but I've also been taught not to just take the word of some guy on the internet you don't know. I hope noone takes what I said negatively, I do like the car and I'm watching this build because I have a 49 Plymouth and I want to see the way other people are making their old cars better.

Thanks, but i'd like to consider it more determination than anything. I had no clue what i was doing other than pictures i have seen what i have read online.

I may go back and just cut some relieve cuts where the window meets the roof at the top. That way the filler is just making up for the overlap, not the little bit of a dip. The amount of time i have will really decide for me. I want the car on the road this spring. But i still want to swap the motor, and install a mustang ii front end with airbags all around.

Most people will tell me to take my time and enjoy working on it. But i enjoy driving more than anything! Even if its a half finished project. If its road worthy and i can put miles on it, im going to!

I have done this before and i agree with DrJ. there is no harm in taking the window out now that it is cut out and flipping it upside down to have a look, it will be more fabrication work, but it is a good look, as the square looking corners move closer to the side quarter windows, you could even restructure your gutter molding to meet up with the rear window on the corners and follow it around making a whole new look rather than have the gutters follow the side windows, your at a stage now that you can do what ever you want and take as many considerations in to account. But it is a brilliant idea DrJ, and i have done this before and it does work.

DrJ and Hemiken are only trying to help out , at this stage you could take away from the great work you have already done . If you do take it out again and try this , you will only gain more knowledge and satisfaction of a job well done . When its out , grab a bit of masking tape and run it over the roof down the back where you think the window will go . Use a few pieces and it will give you a rough idea of the lines , you can move your tape around a lot easier to see what different angles will be . When your happy with the out come and tack it back in , flipped or not , roll it back outside . You can only get a proper view of the lines then .
Good luck , your doing a great job .
