Here is Proffitt's race hemi which he told me he sold to Vander Woude.

And than campaigned as the Flying Dutchman still wearing the Hemi grill and scoop.

  2. Sigh, immaterial and irrelevant. What you say is true, as long as "they" doesn't include Al Vander Woude, who, as I said, built that car (Richard Schroeder helped with the wheelbase mods).

Take your disagreement up with Proffitt. His words, not mine.

A few things point to the fact the it was a Hemi Savoy not a Max Wedge Belvedere.Race Hemi interior for one,Plymouth emblem on the fender makes it a Savoy, lack of the trim that ran the full length of the car on Belvederes, and the unaltered photos trimed as a Hemi. Not taking sides just pointing out what I see.

  5. I understand what you're saying, and the visuals appear to confirm it, but when the Vander Woude family says it's a Belvedere, published reports at the time (Car Craft, Chrysler's Spark Lines, Drag Times, Modern Rod, etc., etc., etc.) call it a Belvedere, and knowing that Al worked at a Chrysler-Plymouth dealer when he built the car (and presumably had access to parts to make it anything he wanted, and had the imagination to do it), then us arguing minutia such as whether it was a Savoy or Belvedere is pointless. It was a wild car, built by a wild visionary, and that should suffice. (BTW, I had forgotten, until I re-read some of the articles, that that was a 510" Hemi that he ran in that car!)

But you're putting out here like it's gospel and I'm trying to keep inaccurate information from being widely disseminated. I didn't disagree with you, I disagreed with the words.

I'm putting out there the fact that Hayden told me on the phone and through email that he sold his 64 Race Hemi to Al. Why would he make this up?

If you want to talk to him about it I can arrange that.

The 3rd pic shows the red interior which is what Hayden had in his 64 Hemi.

Or of Beswick's 61 Pontiac? A friend of my oldest brother owned it up until about 10 years ago, or so.

More than likely that wasn't Beswick in the Pontiac at that point. By this time Beswick most likely was driving his '62 Catalina ... if I'm correct this is Paul Vanderly(sp?) in the ex-Beswick Pontiac. Bonner picture coming in a bit ...

This picture is a little later than the B&W shot ... note the hood scoop, no chrome trim on the front edge of the hood.

  15. Joel,
I believe this was Phil's early '62 "steel" Galaxie. As you know he received a light blue "glass" sedan later on that was wrecked while being flat towed and had it's lightweight stuff transferred into a red hardtop. He then also received a white "glass" sedan that was raced very little.

He had a bunch of '62s!!

Wasn't it owned by Andy Perry at this time? Andy was one of Arnie's mechanics that raced on his own.

Andy Perry isn't a name I'd heard of but it could have been him. I'm basing my educated guess on a photo that I have from Sol Stewart who was around the area then as well as running a couple of drag strips down in the Florida panhandle. His photo says Paul Vanderley. I'm not 100% sure of the timeline though. I believe Larry Johnson had the car at some point too.

I agree Jody, I do believe that both pictures are of the same red '62 car. Except for the stripes on the hood (which could have been replaced with the scooped hood) they look the same to me. These are not the Big Mau Mau car ...

Yep, the red "glass car" never had a hood scoop until much later after Oscar Parker sold it to Reece Gibbs and Reece added one.

Larry Johnson was the Pontiac dealership that sponsored Arnie. Later Larry went on to race for himself. To my knowledge, to date, there has only been 5 owners, including Arnie, that have owned the '61 Ventura.

So far this is the only picture I've found of the Ritchie & Ritchie '63 Plymouth. It looks like the S/S Parade from the 1963 NHRA Winternationals ... sorry that it is cut off in the printed magazine image.

Were the Tubbs cars autos or manuals?

I own the L72 Aztec Bronze Biscayne originally purchased and raced by Dick Ribaudo (RIP) from Duluth MN. Dick raced the car (B/S) extensively at Minnesota Dragways back in the day.

I have been told the picture of it in Post # 357 is the actual car. However, the SS/F class makes me wonder? If anyone has any information about my car from that era I would certainly appreciate it. I understand after Dick sold the car it went to New Ulm MN and was owned by John Bezdichek (sp).

    Thanks in advance.

I was given a copy of this pic when I was doing some research on my car, I was told that the Chev was driven by Ronnie Sox.

The photo says Sept 70'. It looks like the car has regular wide M&H tires, not 7" cheaters with 2 grooves.
Wouldn't a full size Chev with a big block figure something around Super/F during that time period? A good car for the class at the time unless a Cobra Jet showed up.

Tom thanks for your input. I have seen '66 L72's factored as SS/D with a 11.70 dial in...a photo of 'Bisquick' in the CHEVY TALK web site refers. Maybe the Biscayne is my car after all? I have a news letter from Minnesota Dragways dated April 1966 when my car was running B/S. Anymore info is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
