I found a '28 Chevy sedan body and frame about an hour away. Guy wants $1,000. From what I've been reading these old chevys had a lot more wood in them which supposedly resulted in a thin and flimsy body. I would just like to channel the body and make it bare bones as hell. Worth $1,000? initially I thought that was a screamer of deal but the more I've looked, the more I've learned these just dont bring much coin. Does that mean they aren't as buildable as a ford? Should I snag this up, or pass?
I have a 28 ford sedan and have had a 30 ford coupe and study these values all the time? Since you will channel you will be welding square tubing back in anyway for strength. Add a few to the upper body at the same time. Who knows it may have wood intact anyway. I say great deal and it would be cool to see something besides a ford. Do it. I want to see your progress. You can still always negotiate maybe offer $500 ans see where it goes. You may end at 7 or 8 or he may just take 5 based on your approach.
No way. The Chevy bodies are flimsy. You should be able to find a good Model A sedan body for that price. Model T's are usually cheaper. Chevy chassis parts are harder to find, so running a Model A chassis would be cheapest. Why not have a body that bolts on?
It is almost all wood inside. The skin is nailed to that wood inside. I completely de-wooded a '29 coupe for a customer. It took six-months. I will never do that again. We now have a "no early Chevy's" policy at the shop. Not a big fan of wood. No matter how low I turn down the welder, I cannot get a good bead, and it just smokes and burns.
Well, see, He was already asking $2,000 and after bullshitting said $1,000 would make a deal. I doubt he'd go much more than 50% off this price. HA!
Everyone wants or has a Ford! Offer him $800.00 and build something different. I love the fact that people always tell me nice Ford, and I tell them look again. The bodies are pretty easy to build steel structures for.
If you do decide to buy it you'll have the only one everywhere you go. Check out Ghost28's album. It's a 27 Chevy that he replaced all the wood in and it came out great. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=14534
VERY buildable AND NOT a belly button Model A - if the wood is bad, you'll either have to put new wood in or make a steel skeleton (it's been done a few times here). Like TFoch said, look at Ghost's thread and 28Chevy's as well.
I used to have a 28 Chevy sedan. Wooden nightmare. I would pass on it unless its really solid....and they seldom are.
I did indeed pass. I may regret it a whole lot soon, but I have a few other projects that I need to button up first. Also, basically building an entire car is a little above my skills set. Here's the link for anyone. Guy said he'd take $1,000 over the phone. http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/3518774296.html
