Thanks for all of the props .. definately helps keeping me pushing forward. Got slammed with a blizzard today.. so its going to prolong my ability to get some color on the car .. but hopefully by the first of the year i can start spraying. Still have two more christmas parties to attend.. crossin my fingers the hubcap bullets i asked the fiance for show up in a wrapped box.. we'll see. Luke
Great work on the car! It is fantastic to see someone do what you are doing, just take a car and do it all themselves, tackle whatever the car throws at them and make it work! That is awesome man, that will make the car that much more valuable to you and that makes that car more a part of you and you a part of it....Keep it up and I am so looking forward to meeting you in person at a cruise sometime in the future, you in your car me in my car!! Jim
Thats awesome to see the master cylinder from Moraine! Your doing some cool stuff! Nice work on the tag topper. I found one on flea-bay last week and it went for around $70.00!
Got the car prepped and sanded w/ 320 and ready for high build and the plastic all hung up in shop. Got all of the random shit masked off (my favorite .. and ready to rock) Maybe now i can keep half of my tools from turning blue . Got the wheels prepped and hung too. Now i just need to clear out all the bullshit on the floors around the car and get the guns dialed in. Once i can get two or three days back to back (possibly) this weekend.. im going to fire up the kerosene heater warm up the shop and start shooting. Fingers crossed everything goes well. Hopefully by sunday the car will at least be all one color! Luke
So .. I broke out the new Devilbiss HVLP guns Eric (wwauto1) bought, yesterday. Cleaned out the oils with laquer thinner and set up the primer gun with a small mix of highbuild and gave them a try. This is our first time doing any body work and spraying with HVLP guns rather than areosol cans.. and i was pretty pumped with the results. Theres definatly a learning curve to getting the guns set up correctly but after that .. technique wise theyre pretty similar. Since it was the first time we started with the rims.. got them wire wheeled then rubbed out with a scotch brite pad. After they were blown out with the compressor we wiped them down with some wax/grease remover let them dry out a bit and went to town. Being that we were pretty "green" to painting I just dusted the first coat on .. learning the reaction and pattern to the guns a bit. After a few minutes we were ready to rock and got the hang of it. Put three coats of highbuild on all four wheels and left them to dry. Hanging above the heater. You can see Eric (wwauto1) below trying his hand behind the guns, with a second coat. If you look you can see on the bottom two rims how conservative i was on my first coat with the paint. The combination of not knowing what i was doing and crazy crevasses in the steel wheels had me a little nervous the first time around. After 3 coats this is what we ended up with .. (pictured below) Turned out really nice. We will obviously be doing some sanding before they get hit with the final color this week .. but all in all im super happy with the results from our first time on the gun. After the wheels were all wrapped up there was still a bit of primer in the can and i figured why waste it? So i sprayed the remaining little bit on the top portion of the trunk lid. Came out way nicer than i had imagined .. now im getting really pumped. Plan is to preheat the shop over night friday and start priming saturday. Hopefully i can keep the heater on for a couple days and get a good cure out of the primer and get it blocked out and ready for paint either this sunday (might be a stretch) or next weekend to repeat the process. I think most of all i was happy that my sanding and feathering of the imperfections i had corrected on the trunk arent visable. With the exception of some heavy scratches from sand paper it all flows really nicely .. and thats with only one coat. Starting to feel good seeing things finally going together. Until next time ..! Luke
Cleaned up one of the wheels nice and decided to use some of the test pint that i had mixed up to spray one of the wheels and my spray out card. Went with four coats (cause i had some left in the can) .. but the car will probably only end up with three. Color is spot on to what i was wanting .. the gloss level how ever wasnt quite as flat as i was hoping. This pint was mixed with 3/4 paint and a 1/4 flattener so that it would knock off some of the gloss. Once again .. first time with the finish gun so be gentle. Brought them inside last night after i was done so they could cure today at room temp and ill look at them one more time tomorrow and make a decision. They almost look black in the crummy lighting inside.. until you hit them with a light .. then whammy! I may go back over and have them mix me another pint to try a little more flattener so i can see the difference. I like the paint.. and i dont want it flat .. persay .. but i do like that weathered eggshell look that gives the appearance that it was painted years and years ago but the clear has faded. .. kinda like the paint sheen on this truck below .. Unfortunately the easy way would be to flatten the clear, but im not clearing the car this go around. I plan on chopping it and doing some frenching next year so this a temporary spray anyways. Getting the paint where i want it might be a pain who knows.. we will see Luke
Well eric and i got the car in primer Saturday morning.. garage was preheated over night and sitting around 72 degrees Sat when i started. Sprayed two heavy coats of highbuild then went over to a friends to watch my Bengals make a mockery of NFL football. After that non sense was over i got back to work block sanding the car and trying to fix the last of the little imperfections i found. Sprayed two or three coats over the remaing spots that were fixed and thats where im at today. Sunday we sprayed one of the other wheels and got a much better result at the egg shell finish i was looking for. Hoping to get the trunk lid sprayed with it today so i can look at it friday morning and make a final decision before ordering the final mix. If all goes well .. this Saturday hopefully it will be blue! Luke
Welcome from WinterPig, Manitoba Canada...I've got a 52 Canadian Poncho...p.s. make sure your hood latch is good...mine wasn't...twice. Getting hard to find parts for these things.
Saturday is supposed to be in the mid 60's so thats a good day to be spraying! Oh and now you like I don't have to worry about needing to watch another terrible Bengals performance this week, so maybe we can get more work done...
Nice thats what i heard as well. Cross my fingers. Just finished spraying the trunk lid about ten minutes ago. Now im literally sitting here watching paint dry. I'll post up a picture of the paint applied wet in a few.. then another in a day or so when it flattens out completely. Luke
Well here are the pics i was talking about.. After being rubbed out with 400 grit and wiped down with degreaser After playing with the paint on the wheels a few times i found that it was laying down easier by first fogging on coat one and two then laying the third and final coat down heavy and wet. Fog coat #1.. Fog coat #2 .. Coat #3 .. the wet coat .. .. so now its time to wait and see how it flattens out. Its making me nervous .. im worried that any imperfections in my prep will be more prevalent as it dries and flattens. While wet it looks great .. i guess we'll see. Crossing my fingers.. Luke
Well i snuck out this morning before work .. paint flattened out nicely .. got the sheen im looking for so thats a big sigh of relief. Only bummer is the two spots that had a little filler showing through the primer stick out like a sore thumb. I guess i didnt realize how transparent this paint was .. but oh well .. thats why i did the trunk lid first. You live and learn. Worst case scenario i block the trunk back down do a light primer coat over it and prep it back to 400 grit so i can paint it with the rest of the car all at the same time. Paint ended up with a little bit of dust in it too .. not terrible but its there .. i expected some anyways since its just getting sprayed in my garage. I think before i paint the car i will lightly mop the floor the night before to kill out some of the extra settling dust. Anyways heres some pics.. once again.. pretty happy with my first spray job. Overall im really excited with my paint choice. Paint is a mix of Urethane PPG Shopline single stage and flattener. The paint color is from a 2005 Volkswagen Indigo Blue. You can see from the previous pictures it has a nice pearl flake in it too .. nothing too crazy but in the light it pops. Adding the flattener siginficantly played down the flake but its still there and should be subtle enough to be a cool little touch out in the sun. Luke
I love that color. I've been wanting to use a color about like that but with no metalic or perl...It just wouldn't be right for my car. I also wanted to use gloss but I'd consider the suede look like you have depending on how the body work looks! Any way that looks great can't wait to see the whole car painted! Are you gonna re-spray the wheels or leave em glossy? It might be a nice contrast.
Looks very good, really like the color. Good luck this weekend. With the nice weather I'm hoping to get some primer sprayed this weekend on my wagon
On the wheels i believe the plan is to use the chrome hub caps so youll only see the outer lip in blue. Car is looking good, if u guys dont already know im the hombre helping luke out on this build. Just so u guys dont think im some wierdo hijacking the thread. Im glad the paint guns are working out well lot cheaper than having someone else do it and def cooler. Deuces Eric
