Drove my truck for the first time yesterday!! Ok, it was only to back it into the garage, and I had to manipulate the parking brake and shifter with a "oh shit" look on my face the whole time, but I made it all 20ft without any problems, well except for the reverse burn out mark in the driveway from puting in reverse at 1500 rpm. My wife and I had smiles on our faces a mile wide though!!

Anyway, just pulled it out to clean and rearrange, put tools away etc. With the holidays and 2 deaths in the family I havent had much time. On a positive note, my wife and I are having a baby girl! Due at the end of May so that will be cool. Everyone says I'll have to give up my toys because kids are expensive, but we'll see about that. I'll just give her tools to play with instead of toys and then have a helper when shes old enough...heh!

Congrats on both! Cars don't get in the way of being a dad, they just become a lesser priority. You have the passion, but you may find that passion has to be put on hold at times.

looks like a great project ! doesnt look like theres much rust good luck

  8. Congratulations on the news of your baby girl!! Like daddio says, priorities may shift somewhat, but hopefully you can keep at it. I still have my 38 coupe I bought when I was 18, but life (wife, 5 kids, houses) has a way of putting projects on the back burner.

So cool that you drove it for the first time. Yay!!! :)

I agree with the priorities. I recently repalced my truck that I sold for the different priorities. Congratulations are in order. I have some pictures of my oldest son holding a screw driver and looking at a Hot Rod magazine when he was about 2 months old. It didn't help, he is studying to be a doctor now. About the only thing he can do alone on his cars is the oil.

Keep plugging away at the truck, it is looking good. Good to hear that it moved under its own power.

    Thanks 54...

Got a few things done today, got my battery cables cleaned up, they were too short and had to be stretched across to fit, so I bought longer cables and routed them more carefully, looks good. Got the bed back off and sprayed the back of the cab with primer just to even things out a bit, then sprayed the bedside fender areas with undercoating, reinstalled the bed and fenders.

Got a "corrected' cap for my HEI and it looks a lot better without wires all over the engine. Then when I went to put her away I damn near smashed through the back wall of my garage, I guess putting it into park isnt a good way to stop it, but i grabbed the PB in the nick of time and stopped with inches to spare. Guess thats what I get for trying to drive it with no throttle cable and no brakes....

Got my Smithy's in the mail the other day....I think I am going to order one of the mandrel bent exhaust systems with random bends and straights from Jegs and try and make up a system myself. I want the pipes to come out under the running boards in front of the rear tires so it should be pretty straightforward to do. Anyone gone that route?

BTW got the 22" glasspacks, I was unsure which ones to get and dont mind it being a little on the loud side, we will see how it turns out.

Yes I made up my exhaust, using some 180, 90, 45 and straights to fab mine, then I had it all HPC coated inside and out, still looks great after 9 yrs. Here's a couple pics of it going together...Jim

Cut mine into the running boards.

Really easy, just go straight back through mufflers, into a 90 bend at a 45 angle down, another 45 to level out and then tips.

Do you have any problems with it vibrating against the running boards?

    Looks awesome!!

Damn Jim, that is killer. I would like to install some sort of h or x pipe like that, thanks for the pics.

Ol' Chevy, looks good. Guess you had to with it being so low. Thanks for the pointers.

Vibrates a little when cold, then the pipes expand and move into place. If it annoys me enough, I can take a little time and add another mount to solve it.

dont whatever you do when making your exhuast system put them through your front wings, the guy who i got my "50" from did this and its cracked and broke all the rear of the front fenders and he filled them with so much bondo, the first time i used it, it all fell out
got to buy some new lower rear fenders now, so i will be looking to just go straight out the back when i get mine re done

That doesn't sound like the exhaust's fault, that is a testament to a shitty builder! Lemme guess... under the chunks of bondo was rusty metal?

Matt, wasnt planning on coming out there, that seems like a strange spot for a driver. Good luck getting all that fixed though, sucks when you buy something that you think is decent and have to redo it all.....

Thats a good looking Longbed Ol' Chevy has a few posts up!

Shadams... I dropped mine out in the over abundance of rear fender space behind the wheel, just another thought.
