What's the car? Looks like a '56-'57 Ford side chrome, but what's with the strange B piller?

Can anyone identify this one? Looks like a mid '30s Buick or Cadillac to me.

I am surprised to see this here. This ferry crosses the Cape Fear River not about an hour south of me. I take it when I have the time just because it is a beautiful place. Love the old picture.

    I don't think it is mid-30's, I think early 30's. I'll take a shot at it being a '31 Cadillac :)

  24. How rare I'm not sure, they were only made for a few years here in Richmond, VA, the former assembly line/plant is a movie theater now. The Virginia Historical Society has a Durant on display as we type.

Going back a few pages....the origin of racing stripes is quite similar to the color of the racing car itself. This mostly applies to European road racing. Red was, as you may have guess...an Italian manufacturer...Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, etc. Green, known as British Racing Green to many, is well, for those race cars of British origin. Blue for France. Silver for Germany. I cannot recall yellow....Belguim? Just about all race cars from countries that customarily raced on European circuits had a color. If not, then a stripe was used on basic white. So, a U.S. built race car, late joining the overseas racers as a manufacturer, used white with a blue stripe (Shelby GT350, etc.,.) Stripes.....sometimes the color of the driver's country as long as it didn't clash with the base color.. Not always, but often....well, sometimes. This practice has gone away over the years and is not really meaningful now. At least I have the basic facts correct. A proper websearch will reveal much. Others with better memories can jump in here.
