Projects Oh No!!! It Can't Be...Another Gasser Build? Yup, 1961 Buick Skylark

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BloodyKnuckles, Feb 10, 2009.

  1. Just a quick update.

After a few long years, I finally set aside some time to see where I left off. So today, the club and I had a club only day at the shop. Everyone worked on someone's car or contributed one way or another. It was a productive day.

One of the sticking points on this car has been a steering box. With an odd "frame" arch and tight areas, I have struggled to find the proper box. Well after about 5 seperate boxes the one that will be used is a '61 E100 Econline box. It is small and I think it will work very well. I was able to mount it with one bolt to cycle it before any final fabricating.

This has been a rather large hurdle that has been overcome. I am very excited and ready to have this one the road.

    Still to do;

    Mount steering box
Install F1 Spindles and backing plates with Buick finned drums
    Permenantly mount the front spring
    Fabricate hairpin frame mounts
Fully bolt all suspension brackets and components
    Lower rear panhard bar
    Mount master cylinder
    Fabricate shock mounts
    Install radiator
    Source bellhousing and 4 speed
    And so on......

Still have my work cut out for me but I think this is my top priority.

Hopefully more to come soon. Get ready.

    BTW....How did the "deal" go?

  4. Thanks for sticking in there with me, man.

  5. While I would love to have this arguement with you ( we haven't had a good disagreement for a long while), I would think that you would be more concerned that he is fucking up a perfectly good buick. ;)

    Bloody knuckles,
That is a jice car for a project starting place no matter what you do with it. Love the little early '60s GM cars, and that is one sweet Buick.

Hey which engine is that on the floor? Is it a runner and do you have future plans for it?

Hey Man, did you ever do anything with the 215 V8 that came out of the car? I have the perfect home for it.
Very cool build, I'm a big fan of the big motor/little car approach.

  11. I kind of regret it now but I sold it a while ago.

    Thanks man.

Very nice build, I never would have thought about making a 61 buick skylark into a gasser. Wow, great vision.

Do you have any straight on shots of the front end?

    The stance is killer

    Godspeed

  14. Great to see you back on it. Look forward to seeing it get done.

  15. Soon my man!

No head on pics just yet. Thanks for the complements.

    Thanks man. Me too.

So last night I figured out, with some buddies, how to install '61 big Buick backing plates on an early spindle. Details soon.

I absolutely want to run the entire brake assembly due to the sheer size. I figure if they're good enough to stop a big, heavy Buick, they should stop the ElectraLark just fine.

This is exciting stuff. Might it be driveable by autofair? Goals man, goals!

  20. I'm really hoping within the next month and a half.

    Goals!

  21. Had to rub my eyes - at first it looked like this post had been dead since 2011. Where are my glasses? Holy shit!!!?? :) Its like getting back with my old girl friend.

  22. So...you'll be making passes at The Gear Jam?
I hope to have the Nailhead in the Crosley by then.

  23. That's the plan Sam!!

  24. Alright! It's official. I didn't want to say anything to jinx the deal but my '51 Plymouth sold today and it is gone.

So, after a bit of grieving and a bit of extra cash, I am 100% back on the Buick.

Here's what's going on. I made a deal with a friend and ended up with a complete Paxton VS57 in excellent condition. I found and purchased a Holley 650 Double Pumper that has been set up by CSU for a blow through application. This is very exciting for me. I know the naturally aspirated Nailhead would have been plenty of power for this car but now with the Paxton it's on a ho-na-va-le-ful:D:rolleyes:!!

Also, I have my buddy from DC Roadsters machining spacers to mount '61 and up Big Buick backing plates to '36 and down Ford spindles. Man, I can't wait!!

So this week I plan to have the steering box properly mounted and the hairpin mounts fabricated.

Opinions and discussions welcome on the Paxton.

I will document as I have in the past so be prepared!!

    Ron,

What's up bro. I've started down the paxton road a while ago. The man you need to call is John Erb. He'll set you. I highly recommend you have check that VS57 out. The ball drive SCs can eat themselves alive and seize up if the balls have ANY pitting, dirt or imperfections. setting on shelf for years is not good for these. I would also have him convert it to a SN(short nose) 60. The Variable Speed option makes for tuning hell. He can explain all that. He knows is shit about these, been running them since the 60's, designed the High output impeller for them and will set that thing up for your engine and design a cam for you. I'll call you later and and we can chat.

Paradise wheel bought all the Paxton/McCulloch stuff and offers a rebuild service. I have heard many bad things about them. THey are out out of Cali and advertise under the Paxton name.

  26. Congrats, Boobie! I know the '51 will be missed, but you got a lot of good out of that ride....now let someone else enjoy it!

The ElectraLark's future sounds really...uh...fast!!!! Looking forward to seeing it come together!

Now, how 'bout the "other" car? Still thinking about moving forward on it as well?
