Any info on this one? The cars are all outfitted with custom lights. The Lincoln's got what looks like a Lorraine spot on the passenger side, and probably a red light on the driver's side (maybe a siren below the headlight on the passenger side?). E&J bullet shaped headlights on the car to the right, and a rare Owlight at the top of the radiator. Maybe they used their tire money to get the lights.

The city marshal’s office yesterday began inspection of motor vehicles for mechanical defects at four locations, taking over the duties formerly handled by the California Highway Patrol. Here Mrs. Diane Tesler speeds up her motor while Sgt. Charles Harding checks the car for excess smoke and other defects.

 

Sept. 8, 1948: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Dwight Smith drags a load of marijuana from a roadside patch in Rosemead. The plants were later burned.
A story in the next morning’s L.A. Times reported:
Marijuana valued at $20,000 went up in smoke yesterday — but not puff by puff.
An even dozen “trees” of the narcotic weed, some as high as 10 feet, were burned by Lt. Ray Huber and other members of the Sheriff’s narcotic squad and Federal Agent George R. Davis.
Apparently growing wild, the stuff was gathered from two places–beside the fence of a slaughterhouse at Rush St. and Loma Ave., Rosemead, and in an alley behind 6800 Alameda St.
Lt. Huber disclosed that the narcotic squad’s attention was first called to the Rosemead marijuana patch two weeks ago. Since then, he said, there has been a “stake-out” there to nab anyone who attempted to harvest it. When no suspicious characters appeared, it was decided to destroy it under Federal supervision as required by law.

The first stage in a recycling process that converts wrecked American-made autos into shiny new imported cars is taking place in south-eastern Los Angeles County.
On a sweep through wrecking yards in the area, a San Diego firm is buying up old cars and crushing them on the spot into 15-inch-high metal packages before shredding them and shipping them to Japan.
They come back in the form of new Datsuns and Suzukis.
Bill Ven Douris, general manager of the Scrap Disposal Co., said the firm shreds 500 cars a day for shipment. It is not only a good business, according to Ven Douris, it cleans up the landscape.
“It’s an ecology thing, more or less,” he said Tuesday in a Lynwood wrecking yard where he was forklifting about 100 old cars into a pressing machine. Only the tires are removed before the autos go in – glass, chrome, motor and all …
After pressing the cars, they are transported to San Diego, where they are fed into a shredding machine.

The two guys on the left are performing an early narco-ban test to see if the purported contraband is in fact marijuana. The "tests" will be on going throughout the weekend.

Robert Stack's '31 Model A Roadster.

In 1960 Robert Stack of Hollywood, California won a Best Actor Emmy-award for his role as Elliot Ness in the television drama series, The Untouchables. 22 years earlier, In 1938, Bob drove his 1931 Ford Model A roadster to a record of 115.68 mph on the Muroc Dry Lake. Al Jepson and Ed Winfield helped Bob achieve a time not too many other four-cylinder Fords could match in 1938. The car is long gone, but the original Model B Cragar OHV converted four banger that Bob ran is still around. It is currently owned by David Zivot, who wants to build an accurate replication of Bob's roadster around it. David was able to talk to Bob about the roadster before he passed away.
