Baron, good to hear and see that knowing your appreciation of Corvette hot rods. From what is showing in the trailer it looks pretty good. I have pics of three 56/57 M/SP Vettes from 1967 (the last year before they morphed into the gas classes) over my desk. While working they help keep my mind right. There were a bunch that carried themselves pretty well in the 60s. What are your plans? -Jim

Very nice start. Did you get any trim with it?

Thanks Jim. The body is very decent. The frame has been blasted and powder coated black, along with all the suspension pieces, rear end ,springs etc. I have 95% of the trim, seats, interior, etc. Many of the parts ,such as the seat frames, radiator support and shroud, have also been powder coated. Has a rebuilt 327 in along with a Muncie 4 spd tranny.
I really want to put a straight axle under it,but the front suspension is completely rebuilt, and looks great in the black powder coat, so maybe I'll put a set of blocks under it and see if that takes the axle urge away. We'll see. I still have a few months of work left on my 49 Olds, than I have to make a decision weather to do the Corvette next or get back on my Graffiti Coupe project. Either way, the first thing I will do is iron out the rest of the body work and get it in primer. I have wanted another 56-7 Corvette since I traded my last one back in 1972. I am thrilled to have found this one, and really look forward to the build. Long live Hot Rod Corvettes.
I always liked the look of Ross's old car

Sounds good Baron. Straight axles are pretty cool but I suppose it depends on what era you are trying to re-capture. The Wes 56/57 you pictured would have to be 1968 at the earliest since he is running D/G (I also am a fan of the car). Prior to 1968 he would have been in DM/SP more than likely. In 68 most of these Vettes came down closer to a stock height with the better tires. Of course there were still Vettes running with an up stance and I am partial to the up stance myself. I have both with a straight axle and others with blocks-they both look great in my opinion. As you know Mazmanian ran his car with blocks in the early 60s and his car is hard to throw stones at. Blocks you can put in on a weekend and your biggest decision may be how tall a block do you use.

Whether you get to the car right away is not as important as having it in your collection. That way you will be able to plan everything in your head before starting on the resurrection anyways. There were a bunch of 56/57 drag cars and good to see someone build a car that captures that era rather than another NCRS type restoration. I think there are enough of those that we wont forget what they looked like on the showroom floor.

    Cool-Jim

Thanks Jim. You are right on with the year. I started going to the drags in 67-8 (as soon as I got my driver's license) and these were ( still are ) two of my favorite cars from that era. They were the main cause of me buying my first 57 Corvette in 1971( for $750.00 ). A bit more costly today , but at 61, I am not getting any younger. Looking forward to the project.

And this one shows up at the Nostalgia Drags every year, and it is always “the car that I’d take home” if I had my choice.

Baron cool pics- we are about the same age and I spent most of my weekends at the local track in 68-70 with a 61 Vette and 57 Vette, so that has pretty much dictated my interest in these cars to this day.

Always liked the Wes auto body car front tires. I really like the way they fill up the wheelwell (more than likely it was for rollout rather than looks). I see Barb Hamilton's Willys in the background.Jim

that big front tire look was neat---roll out was the key

  9. Did I mention I hate you for getting that 57 :)

I'd take most any project C1 with a title and a good VIN.

    Baron,

Great find and good luck with the project,
here are some pictures of my buddys 56, he has owned for over 30 years and races everyweekend with it.

Looks like between our cars and few others maybe about 10 or 12 corvettes, the rest of the corvettes out there are all stock and never raced, just get on the corvette forums, there all stock and never modified.

i know my 62 is all stock except for removing the emblems and letters ,running the spine all the way down the trunk,a couple of extra tail lights 45 years ago and has never been raced except on the street and at drag strips and the solid roller and nine inch might be after market---i love making them cry...proudly one of " THE TWELVE "

Congrats on the find Baron...was it local ??? I'm jealous of you big time. Will the car be strip only or street/strip ?? I've been tempted to do something with mine but so far I've resisted ...it's kinda too nice and original to mess with.

Here it is before even earlier running the stock front end with some very tall spacers !

This came from PA. This will be a street /strip (Nostalgia Drags) car. Your 57 is stunning. I can undersand not wanting to do anything to yours( although a set of 3"-4" blocks in the front, reverse the shackles in the rear and a nice set of early American's would certainly change the look of the car,not hurt the value and easy to change back :D ). Mine is the perfect candidate for what I want to do to it. Been waiting a long time to do another one of these. I am psyched :D

Thanks. Your friend's 56 is beautiful. I'll have to renew my NCRS membership . This is my 18th Corvette, and not one of them has remained stock. When this car is done, I'll be as hated by the local Corvette club as I was the North Shore Old Car Club for "cutting up" all those old Fords. :p

JP, There might be a few more than you think, I have about that many in our NJO solid axle racing series and are working on getting some more cars. All our cars are street/strip and are based on the old M/P rules. Racing these cars against each other is a Blast. When I go to a Cruise night, the crowd walks by the stockers and gather at my car.:D Jim

    Hi Baron,

Love your new project, from what I can see of the body it looks solid. Last year was my first race season with my Vette and it was a riot.

Good luck with it and if you need anything feel free to contact me.

What are you going to do with the 55 ???

Hey Bob, how far out in Ohio are you East/West?? We in the NJO are now going to use Numidia Pa. as our new home track. We also will be doing Beaver Springs for the 10th Annual YORK NOSTALGIA NATIONALS.

Is that within your travel limits?? For us in NJ, it is a real long trip, but we will do it. We would really like to meet you and your car. Jim

Nothing looks better than a Corvette drag car!!

Here are a few recent day shots of an old car, I saw this baby at the NCRS show in Kissimmee, Florida over the weekend.

I remember seeing it race several times years ago in and around the Atlanta area. Anybody remember Jabo Elam that also raced a Corvette around that same time/place? I believe it was a C-3...

Hi Bob. Thanks. I appreciate the pictures you have sent me already. My 55 is not going anywhere. I think the two are going to look great parked side by side in my garage. :) Just got back home from a week in Florida, so I can finally get the Corvette out of the trailer and give it a good once over. I am not expecting any surprises. I'll post some better pictures too.
