no matter where you live, Speedworld needs your help NOW

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by applekrate, Jan 29, 2013.

  1. Hello everyone,

This is an important issue concerning Speedworld in Arizona closing. Whether you race or not, Speedworld has been an important facitlity for motorsports providing millions of dollars each year to surrounding businesses, providing much tax revenue and a place to people to enjoy various forms of motorsports including drag racing, motorcross, sand drags, dirt racing and more.

I ask you all to contact at least the following government officials concerning Speedworld being forced to close permantently

Speedworld is important to the local economy

10s of thousands of people attend each year. That is millions of dollars related to local revenue and taxes in that area.

People attend from all over the county, all over the state and all over theUS.

Think of who else will hurt from these decisions-

Places to eat, gas stations, Hotels, motorcycle and race car shops, golf cart stores and on and on.

Do not let big government t close this important facility!

I urge you all to politely call these government officials who represent that district and ask to speak with them directly concerning WHY are they letting Speedworld close?

    Call-

Max Wilson- county board of supervisors dist 4 602) 506-7642

    https://www.maricopa....[IMG]

    Also- State dist 22

    Senator Judy Berges 602) 926-5861

    Representatives-

    1. Rep dist 22 Phil Lovas 602) 926-3297

    2. Rep dist 22 David Livingston Phone Number: (602) 926-4178

I have already personally called thiese numbers but, I am one person. We all need to voice our feelings together. Tell your friends, family members, anyone you can think of. Have everyone call these offices directly.

Let's get off of our butts and do something before it becomes history to just talk about.

Also, contact your own state Senator and representatives in your own district and voice your concerns.

If you want help with this from me to find out who your reps are, let me know.

    PLEASE, DO SOMETHING!

    thank you

    Steve

  2. bttt to help out the track but I have a bad feeling the dye has been cast already. I hope I am wrong.

  3. I guess no one cares here. No responce other than 1. The people here ( besides me) are just going to sit back and watch Speedworld sink to death.
    Thanks for nothing.

Get up off your hind end and make some phone calls!

Besides the ones already listed, call Kim Morey 602) 542-4621 ( Az state land trust dept )
and voice your feelings about Speedworld.

just because only one person responded to your post doesn't mean that many haven't copied the contact list and numbers and are ardently working to get the word out to those folks.

Being on the other side of the nation, I don't know what speedworld is.
Could you please describe, or post a link to it?
I've never heard of it, never knew there was a problem there.

    Thanks.

    Steve,
Why are they trying to close the place down? I will call and pass it on to others to help the cause.

  8. Guys and gals this is a very cool track and a big part of our history and totally represents why we do what we do, so please join in and make the call or write. I used to live just a few miles from the track, it's a awesome small time track!!

Here are some links, www.racespeedworld.com, this is the web site for all the events from bicycles, off-road racing, to drag racing.

This is the link to jst the drag strip only, www.speedworlddragstrip.com, I hope that helps Steve, all the best, TR

  9. The second link doesn't seem to work, so just use either one, and then click the DRAGSTRIP tab.

Maricopa County Says No to Drag Racing – Refuses to Issue Speedworld’s NHRA National Open Permit

in Auto Racing / by Jim Hahn / on January 30, 2013 at 1:21 PM /

Wittmann, Arizona (January 30, 2013) — In an ever changing turn of events, today Maricopa County officials refused to issue Speedworld a permit for the NHRA National Open scheduled to run this weekend. As the track can’t run without the required permits, the race has been forced to be canceled.
Dan Matthews worked late into the night Tuesday is an effort to make this race a reality. Word late Tuesday was that Speedworld had reached an agreement, a permit would be granted and the NHRA National Open would run as scheduled.
After some Wednesday morning communications, it was learned that the County would not be issuing the required permits as was relayed Tuesday night.
It is believed that Senator Burges has an afternoon meeting scheduled with Arizona State Land Department personnel, but will it be too late? Should she be meeting with Maricopa County instead?
This is the second major event in the past two weeks that has been unable to take place at Speedworld. Without the help of the community, it appears Arizona Auto Scene’s article on Speedworld closing sooner than later may have hit the nail on the head.
With the closure of Firebird International Raceway just a couple of short months down the road, this is a huge hit on Arizona’s drag racing community.
    Here’s the word straight from Speedworld’s Facebook page;
    “THE COUNTY LIED!!
Wednesday Morning (today) Maricopa county officials on behalf of their Land & Development attorney Wayne Peck, refused to issue a Temporary Use Permit THAT THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY AGREED TO ISSUE, causing the cancellation of our National Open.
CALL MARICOPA COUNTY, from wherever you are, and let your voices be heard! We are VERY, VERY SORRY for all of the hassle and difficulty this is causing our racers, we are devastated and frankly disgusted that our elected and officials would play this game of duplicity, bad faith and lies. Keep checking with the Speedworld website for information on further developments.”
Contact Senator Burges and others from the Arizona State Legislature and voice your concerns. Lets do what we can to KEEP SPEEDWORLD OPEN!

Damn, that post looks like hell... But seriously call those numbers, send those e-mails, and make it known that we support motorsports here in AZ.

Lots of people likely care, the unfortunate part of it is that it probably won't matter how many people are opposed to what is happening.

The fate of these race tracks is usually decided way before most people hear about it and no matter how many letters or call are made it will not change.

Good luck, however resistance is futile, you will be assimilated. ;)

  13. I'm game for getting some cars together and doing an organized protest. Maybe that would help them understand that designated places for "noisy cars" is a damn good idea.

The city/investors/developers have had this in the works long ago. YOU need to contact the local media and expose this. The likely hood of 'back room dealing's are high. Also check who the joining property owners are. Friend or foe?

The only reason I can see this happening is for future development (i.e. homes) in this area. All the politicians on the list given by the original poster are kooks, I live in District 3 and can't vote against them. I will email them but this latest move tells me it is probably too late. Also disappointed that the NHRA does nothing while the sport continues to shrink.
I work weekends but make it to Speedworld when I can, always enjoyed the PSCA/NMCA races.
    Good luck Speedworld.

  24. Yes, there will be a rally at the Az state capital on Sat Feb 9th.
    http://www.arizonaautoscene.com/events/rally-at-the-capitol-to-save-speedworld
Please attend, get your family, friends, kids, everyone, to attend and to call these numbers! We NEED to FLOOD these offices with concerning phone calls. It is TOO important to sit back. DO something.

But, we need people to call those numbers each day! Voice your comments that you do NOT want this track closed. It is NOT in the best interest of area businesses either.

It does not matter where you live. If you live out of town, out of state or out of country, please still call these numbers. People attend drags and other forms of motorsports at Speedworld from all over. The fact that people not living in the Phoenix area are concerned should be all the more pressing to these leaders that incoming future revenue will not happen if Speedworld is closed.

    Lions
    Beeline
    Irwindale
    Half MoonBay
    Fontana
and dozens of others... all GONE! just memories
Think about it.... do not sit back and let Speedworld be added to this list of dead race tracks. Let it continue to LIVE. We need every drag strip we have on this planet. We do not need less.

This track has been around since 1961! I want future generations to be able to enjoy this track the way I and we do! Let's not be self centered, if effects 10s of thousands of people present and future.
Please help us keep Speedworld open! Alive! for us and the future.
    Very important.
Phone calls can make a difference. A lot More difference than comments.

Thank you all for your efforts so far. I will NOT sit back and watch Speedworld sink. I will continue to do everything I can. Please help.

If you wish to speak to me directly

Applekrate makes a very good point about something without saying it... E-mails are great, but hit the delete button and it's gone. FAR more impressive is lighting up the phones in an office. There is no choice but to deal with who ever is on the line. I'll make my round of calls in the morning and probably repeat on Friday.

  27. Maybe speed channel could start running a marathon of Pinks shows to spread the word to those without the Hamb. Kind of remind city officials of the revenue that the track can create.

It's a drag strip and obviously been for a while. Maybe I am missing it, but how can the county not issue them a permit to race? What is the reason they are giving? Noise, pollution, need space for another crap tract housing development? Seems odd that just out of the blue they decided not to give them a permit anymore for no specific reason. Even if they are lying, they must be giving some half ass reason.
