I drove with just a tach for two years in my Studebaker truck. Just figured the rpm for 30 and 60 mph. No problem.

been driving my hot rod with the tach only. works fine for me. just follow traffic and if your on the open road with no other cars....well hold on!

  3. That means my '65 GTO was goin' 2000 mph, because I was cruizin' in high gear doin' about 4000 rpm! :D

  4. Don't know about you but around here our school zones are 15mph and if you are going at more than an idle it is too fast for the area. Kids can dart out in an instant.

that wasn't the actual mathematical equation - it was shorthand for at 60 your turning 30 (which meant 3,000 RPM)

Or you had the world's fastest Get Tools O0ut and by our way you would have been doing 80MPH

I drove a "big truck" for some years. I used the tach all the time. I used the speedo too but pulling up and down a hill I like to see the tach so I shift before I run outta steam. And yes I listen too but still I like to see my gauges.

My speedo would work if I changed the gearing in the tranny, 2800 rpm is 60 mph.
I'm glad my fuel gauge works, don't have to worry about running out of fuel.

You dont need no stinkin speedo!:D The 1st day my speedo was hooked up, it spun to far and the 60 year old spring inside broke. So for about 3 years ive been driving with just the tach.

When I first got my 27 done years ago I used a gps to plot my speed, and I put white paint dots on my tach to indicate the most popular speed limits, like 35 mph, 45 mph, and 55 mph. But this time around I switched from 3.70 gears to 4.30's and I lucked out because every 1000 rpms coincidently being exactly 20 mph incriments. Made it pretty easy to know how fast I am going in high gear.

I just got in from class and I'm surprised how many use only the tach. When I first built my T, I wanted the bare bones look. But I didn't have the calculations for RPM/MPH, so I got a speedo. After I joined the HAMB and got the numbers, it was kinda too late. And like I said, with no gas guage, I end up using my speedo mainly for the odometer.

Funny, I just replaced my speedo last week, when it broke and for a couple days didn't use it or the tach. My other problem is my tach is only 2 1/2" and mounted on my column, just below my steering wheel. So, to read it, I have to lean over to see it. I also speed everywhere, so I do need a speedo.

But seeing that Ferrari dash sure made me wish for a big tach in my dash. It just looks bad ass only having minimal guages.

    Thanks for the responses.

Neither the tach nor speedo work in my truck. I can do a pretty good job of knowing speed by the sound of the engine. Then again, it's not fast.

A local buddy painted the MPH on his tach glass for reference in high gear. Not real attractive but effective.

Gauges are a distraction.....Just a tach with the face blacked out so I only see the redline

  17. my uncles 1940 chevy (which i am still looking for any info about it) in the link below only had a tach; he says he never got a speeding ticket. i have an OT pickup that the speedo craped out on me. got a few tickets before i figured out how to follow the tach. fixing it is on my to do list somewhere...

  18. They don't buy I weas only doing XXX MPH either if they stop you it is to give you a ticket not to pass the time of day.

I have always wanted a 200 MPH speedo so my car would go that fast. But while I may someday have a good working speedo I will not be caught wearing one.

  19. I drove my 38 coupe for about 6 years with just the Tach as the speedo only kinda worked, sitting at idle I would apparently be bouncing between roughly 180mph and stationary. No one would believe my coupe could do 0-180mph in less than a second?? Then driving I would going even quicker, even in traffic!!
Changed drive units, different size cogs, new cables and had the guage 'fixed' once. Still didn't fucking work!
So one night on the highway north of Sydney me and a mate with a damn fast HG Monaro went cruising, up through the gears to as fast as it will go. Had his rider in contact with mine, she called speeds out to mine on the phone. Mine jotted down their speeds and what our tach was reading.
Just remember what the speed was at what tach reading in each gear, no need for a speedo............

    Doc.

(Why do I always think of my grandfather and want to shoot Jap's whenever I hear someone say 'Speedo'?:eek:)

  20. I never heard it called shooting japs before. :D All I know is that an old man in a speedo is major buzz kill.
