this custom 9 inch a decent deal?

    Been talking to a co about getting a rear end with a custom width for a '30 Model A.

    This is what I have from them, is this reasonable?

    This would be a complete 31 spline setup with your choice of gear ratio. All of our housings are jig-welded with new 3" DOM tubing. We use new Moser axles, not factory re-splines. In the center section we use a new Ford Motorsports Trac-Lock Posi Unit that has a nodular iron case and a billet steel hat, not a Torque-Lock unit (modified open carrier) like others are selling on eBay. We also offer a Detroit Locker Unit, a full spool, as well as a standard open (one wheel) carrier. If you would rather go one of these routes let me know and I will get you some updated prices.

    As for the brakes, we have a complete 9" Ford 11" Drum Brake Kit for $300 and Disc Brake Kits for $239 (w/o parking brake) or $369 (w/ parking brake).     Looks like retail pricing to me or maybe a bit over.
    I purchased my axles from Moser for around $450 but they also have different levels of axles available. Had the housing narrowed locally for $100.
    The center section sounds close given that it's using new parts. Would the nodular case be new or an older one?

    To me those prices seem about right. Sounds like some quality parts, like the Moser axles and Track-loc center section. I am running the same Track-loc and am glad it is the one I chose.

    All in all, I think I would pay that price. I would take the brake deal too, as it saves a lot of running around and $300 isn't out of line.

  6. Yep, full retail. No real deal here.

    I've got roughly 1/2 that into mine and mine is built stronger.

    I see they say that the posi has a nodular case but they don't mention that the center section is nodular. Nothing like putting bullet-proof parts into a paper mache case. BUT..........

    Do you really need that much rear end? Are you racing? Do you have a lot of power? Overkill = Overspent

    FWIW, I puchashed all my parts separately, 57 Ford housing, "N" case, Nascar pinion bearing support and pinion yoke, Moser 31 spline axles, Detroit soft locker, Precision Gear- Ring & Pinion, 9" master overhaul kit, and Wilwood discs. It ended up costing a little over $2k. I should've gotten a complete unit :)

    To be fair the comment about whether I need that much rear end is one that resonates with me...I hear you.

    I might stick with the early Bronco unit I picked up.

  9. A Ford 9" is a smart way to go.

    But to have Moser axles, 31 spline and nodular parts when they are not necessary, well........ Let's just say that you could use that, extra money spent, on more important things.

    Yea, we all love to make things bulletproof so we won't have any issues. But installing a stock 9" in a lightweight car with 300 or so horse will be bulletproof enough.

    And if you have nowhere else to spend the extra money...... buy me a beer!

    I've always gone the junkyard rear end direction because I couldn't afford a brand new setup, but my Son bought his from American Autoweld and it sure was nice working with everything brand new. No grease or rust to scrape off, no extra brackets to cut and grind smooth, no axle bearings to replace, and no running all over the place for parts to replace those that were worn out.

    We are doing two OT cars right now and both will get brand new rear end assemblies because in the end the price isn't all that much different when you factor in your time and labor.

  11. That's an interesting way to suspend it Don!

    I prefer to take the "scrounge" method.

    Right now there are guys in the Charlotte, NC area selling new axle housings on the Charlotte area Craigslist for $100.00. My Nodular cases I find all over... Craigslist, swap meets, junkyards, RacingJunk, etc. I run a spool and I can find them, in new condition, at swap meets for $75.00. The gears depend on what's out there. Some I find used but never used, others I buy new. Axles depend on what I'm dealing with. Some I'll use re-splined Ford axles and some I go with Moser.

    When I buy new the internet is my best friend and I'm not referring to Evil Bay. I'll Google the part number, that always gets me the part and all the places that sell it. Then I find the lowest price on the net, call Summit Racing, tell them that price and where I found it and Summit beats the price by 10%. My Moser axles with bearings, studs and retainers cost me $295.00 for the pair. And YES! I have the receipts!

    I also got my rear wheels & tires down from almost $1500.00 down to $874.00.

  17. Same here. I thought I'd save some $$$$ by building my own 9 inch from ebay/HAMB classifieds/local parts. Used a 57 housing with an "N" carrier housing, datona pinion bearing retainer and dutchman axles..rebuilt the posi myself...had a buddy set up the gears....had over 1400 in it before any brakes were bought! Could have saved money and time by just buying a complete unit also.

    like others have said, the 31 spline and internals seem over kill on a light car that will presumably not be able to hook up anyway (skinny tires im assuming).

    not a bad price for new stuff and what it is though but do you need it?

    I like MOSER.... They have always been great to me. The tech dept will give you all the info, then give you a purchase order, then I call Summit, get the big discount, and have it shipped from Moser directly to me. I saved many $ to many times to count, and they are doin an overstock sale right now ta-boot

    Depending on the theme of your build, you might like to consider Winters non quick change banjo style rear end.

    It's a really nice and stout rear with modern internals and all the features of the 9" rears you are looking at but with an old style look.

    A nice unit.

    Johns out of michigan $650 for new housing axles and bearings and used center section traction lock 323 gears $300. $950 total. 2 years ago.

    I've got to agree with HRP on that one. If you already have a complete rear end that fits why go out and spend that much money for something that is beyond overkill for what you intend to do?

    If you are building a car that is packing 500 + hp and will make a lot of passes down the quarter then spending the money for a rear end with all the good stuff makes sense.

    But as several others said, if you want to go with a custom rear end shop and shop some more. Mosers, Currey and Dutrchmans all produce good stuff and their prices are right out there online to compare by. No doubt there are several others that can produce a good rear end with new pieces that has a competitive price too.

    322 Nailhead with an early Ford topload 3spd does not need a nodular 9 inch rear. The Trans will likely be the weakest link in the driveline. You could get away with a properly rebuilt Ford Banjo rear.
    I would keep the Bronco rear, replace the seals, check the bearings and leave it alone. To freshen the Bronco rear should not cost too much, a couple hundred or less for good bearings and seals. Then if you want to spend more for a posi/limited slip unit you could. Even the 28 spline axles will be more than enough for you at this point.
    I dont think the prices you got are out of order, just not a necessary component for this build.

    I was just trying to get a feel for how reasonable the prices were but the Bronco unit will indeed be sliding under the car. It is a 76 unit with large bearings.

    Been reading the thread that describes how to fit Buick drums to a 9 inch, every trip to HAMB is a learning experience.
