Go for it. I had never touched a welder before last March, when I started tearing into this thing. Floor pans are good for practice because they're pretty easy to make (and re-make if you screw up), and if it's ugly they don't show. I wish I had space for an English wheel, if for no other reason than to be able to pre-stretch the metal before rolling a bead. If I had to do more of the floor than I do, I would get one.

WOW! What a great thread! You are a man of many talents and you\re using them well. The welding sure came along fast. Love the tools you made, especially beefing up the roller and the hinge-pin tool. The car is gonna be awesome and your daughter will be a direct beneficiary of all your work. How cool would it be to drop her off at school in that!

That must have been an EFI motor - are you going to carb it now? Also loving the flatty dual carb set-up. Enjoy rebuilding the 5.0 - they are a hell of a lot easier than the flatty's!!

    Cheers!!

Thanks! Yep it's a 1990 Mustang 5.0 HO roller motor, going to be carbed with Edelbrock Performer 289 and Holley 600 carb.

Thanks guys! I figured I'd better have some progress to report before starting a build thread.

Now I'm out of town for 11 days, killing time and getting myself into trouble by coming up with big ideas for the flathead once the 50 is done...

Wish I could afford to do one of these:

What is that awesomeness? And I thought I was lucky when I sent my hinges out for a rebuild today. You gonna leave it purple and just paint your car to match:D

Yep, I saw the guy sell one exactly like it a month or so ago, it sold for $5 more than my max bid. He put this one up (may be the same one for all I know), and got it for $100 less. Not sure what it's out of.

I'm painting the car 2010 Challenger Plum Crazy. I'll try the wheel out as-is, but may have to paint the purple to match. I love it though! I'm also going to restore my stock wheel and do some Plum Crazy highlights, so I can switch them out depending on my mood.

Gonna try to hit the garage again tonight after my daughter goes to bed.

I also made a deal for a NOS passenger-side front door, so that's one less door I'll need to fix.

Too bad I wasn't on here and in touch with you when I had my donor 4 door. It had nice doors all around... That's cool that your doing purple with your car. I don't think I have ever seen a purple shoebox before. I'm thinking black with a perl on my car but who knows maybe color is in the cards for my car as well. Put up a pick of it when you get it mounted.

I'm always a day late and dollar short. Still looking for the passenger rear door if you hear of anything. My driver-side doors are fixed already.

The car will eventually be my 4-yr-old daughters, so when I was agonizing over colors my wife suggested I ask her. "PINK!" Of course. But no. "Okay, purple!" Purple I can do, and you're right, I've not seen any purple shoeboxes. I'd like to do a much deeper purple, almost black, but I don't think my bodywork skills will allow it to do anything but look like shit that color. I posted a pic of the color earlier in the thread.

I had someone in the photoshop thread fix me up, but I caught a lot of shit over the wheels when I posted it in another thread. The guy that did the photoshop didn't do me any favors when he made the wheels look like 20s with low-profile tires on them. Here's the photoshop without the wheels:

Here's a photoshop that sevenevez hooked me up with for an interior idea (thanks bro!). This is of a '51 Vicky, but gives an idea where I want to go:

I still haven't decided on frenching the headlights, and removing the front emblem. I am decking it, so I supposed I ought to nose it too. Also debating chopping it about 2-3". That's beyond my skill level, so I'd need to find someone to help me do it at a reasonable price.

You can do bodywork man, just use guidcoat (spray on not dry) and just do a panel at a time. I'm relatively new to body so it takes me longer than a guy that has been doing it for a while but I can make a panel straight and shinny! If you have any questions when you get to that point if I can answer them I will and if I don't know I have a few bad ass painter friends that have not steered me wrong yet.

Looks good man keep it up.

Regarding a reasonably priced Shoebox chop, talk to Akreone (HAMB name) in Slay Lake. He's done three that I know of, and will probably do mine when I'm ready.

I would enjoy it more if I didn't have to cobble the rockers together. I'm envious of all the guys with tudors and coupes. Fixing those rockers would be a breeze!

That steering wheel is sweet !!
Does the guy have the correct diameter and size for the steering shaft ?? Or do you have to modify ??

The wheel fits the stock steering shaft. I still need to cut it off the box and fit it with the Volvo box.

That would be an option, but it's HOK Violette Kandy over silver base. Two problems with that, first being the cost of the paint. The second being I will be doing all the bodywork, having a guy shoot the paint, and me doing all the wet sanding and buffing. Since I've never done anything like this before, I'd hate to waste extremely expensive paint on my experimentation.
