Showboat. Tommy Ivo's four-wheel driven dragster, powered by four Buick nailhead engines.

Tommy Ivo's twin Buick dragster. Hear he was the first to use two engines when Nitromethane was temporarily banned in 1957.

EDIT: Oops. The last photo is his Barnstormer, a Hemi-powered dragster.

Yes, it is an Avenger, and yes it probably went through the arresting cables (or they broke)...but you are not correct in stating that the Navy did not bury plane and pilot at sea...when the pilot or crew died from wounds and the plane was too badly damaged to repair, they did bury both together...here is one story I found:
In the award winning documentary series, Victory at Sea, the episode entitled "The Conquest of Micronesia" aired several solemn and moving burial at sea scenes. The final scene showed a sailor buried at sea in the plane in which he gave his life. The plane was so badly hit by 40mm anti-aircraft (AA) shells, the Navy decided to leave his body in the plane. In fact, orders also came down not to strip the plane for parts - which was quite an extraordinary tribute at the time since aircraft parts were scarce and in demand.

  8. Looks like Garlits is really making a point here! The ill fated red car, looks like Irwindale.

  9. A great vintage clip I found on YouTube - Harold Lloyd ('...where did you learn to drive?") and the Babe! Also notice - is that the iron horse walking past the car at the stadium? Sure looks like him to me. First music sounds like the Beau Hunks. Big thanks to the person that posted this clip.

1970 Buick Stage 2 cars. One was raced by Reynolds Buick. One was raced by Doug Jones & Dave Benesik. Another was a test car at the factory that, reportedly, was destroyed in a fire. Not sure how many actually were made, but Stage 2 parts were sold over the counter to the public for a short period.

Did you happen to know a gentleman from the GM Tech Center in Burbank by the name of Bill Trevor? He raced a red and white '57 Buick in stock class, including at the Winternats. Friends with Lennie I believe...

Bunch is in southwestern Adair County right next to the Cookson Hills Game Refuge. Stilwell is our county seat. There are more pictures on this page than there are people who live in the village itself. I live just northwest of town and can hear the Kansas City Southern RR as it goes by.
