I never liked the Knock-Off wheels, but I'm really glad that the restorers love them. I made the tire & wheel change, as well as putting a few surplus bucks in the bank! :D

Here's a pic of my roadster with the polished big and little tt's. By the way these tires and wheels are for sale. Check the classifieds if interested.

Okay, I've got a question. (read all this and no one commented on this)

Why do the "modern" Americans look so different than the Americans I bought back in the late 60s? I know the centers are painted rather than "as cast", but the rims seem duller and much thicker than my old ones. Actally the aluminum seems "whiteish" instead of the crisp "golden" of the old wheels. Any AR experts have an answer?

15x8.5 and 275s - 15x6 up front put I can't remember the tire size. Thei pic doesn't look near as blurry when is smaller. Sorry about that.

  17. I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.....:)

Maybe the Aluminum is different. The new Torque thrust are made in China and the rim seems to be brushed wherer the old ones were polished. Not sure if the old ones were sand cast as opposed to how they are made today. Just some thoughts.....

Thanks Andy, the new TTO wheels like I have on my pickup look nothing like the old torque thrust wheels......but man it's hard to find a set with 4 1/2" bolt pattern wheels in 15"X6" and 15"X7" but when I find a set worth the money I'll get them.....there's no look like the old style.:D

I had to narrow my rear end .5 on both sides to run my 8.5in Americans on my 62 Impala. 7in on the front

One reason is the center section is a bigger diameter - center caps from earlier models will not fit on the newer versions. Spokes are a slightly different shape. Torque Thrust "D"s now have painted centers - ones back when did not have paint at all. And the "TTO" wheels from now don't have that very slight goldish appearance in the centers that the old ones did. I Assume the alloy is a bit different. Old wheels had a machined lip, new ones are more polished.

I'm sure someone else will add better info - I'm no expert!

Hey thanks. I used to save EVERY dollar I made pumping gas and sanding cars to buy big Americans for my (kinda stock) drivers - ONE wheel at a time! There was nothing better than a brand new Muscle car or a hot rod running a set of raw/machined Americans - serious business!

It sure is worth it... That looks great

Here's my wagon now with the Halibrands five spokes and less rubber in the front and more in the rear. I like the look much better. 15X6's on the front brought the tires further inboard and have 195/65/15's , I had tire clearance issues to the inner fender bolt (I can put them back in now!)
15X8's on the rear instead of 15X8.5's now allows the little extra clearance I needed and I went with 235/70/15's, which barely squeeze in the opening, but they just clear without disconnecting the shock.

Before with 7's all around and 205/70's and 215/70's kinda of a wimpy rubber rake.
