This is off topic, but I had to vent some. Had plans to start my 32 x 48 shop this spring. Well when my wife and I filed taxes apparently some ***hole has already filed using her social. No return coming back for 6-8 months and tons of paperwork.

I know I am still lucky, good jobs, good health, healthy kids, and this is just a hiccup. It is still just a kick in the nuts though, so many big plans.....thought I was gonna get my shop and this f100 off the ground finally. No more parts buying, or building until this gets settled. Guess it's not the right time!

I'm bleedin' with you, man. Someone stole my social a few years back and used my name to hook up phone and electric service. Took years to sort out.

Where do you start? Where is the first place you go?

Local sheriffs office? Do I wait for the IRS to process everything......No one at the IRS can/will give us any answers.

Same thing happened to me when I filed taxes for 2010. I just got my refund check before Christmas. You have to wait for the IRS to sort it out, they take forever, and no amount of bugging them will speed up the process. I called once a month at least for nearly two years.

On the bright side, they give you a unique code number to use for all your future tax returns so you won't have to go through this again.

The State of South Carolina has had it's data base hacked and every citizen that have paid taxes has had their Social Security number stolen.

The state has spent millions of dollars to provide protection for the people but still haven discovered who hacked the system. HRP

I feel for you. Someone stole my iden***y and it took 2 years to sort out. Since then, I flag my I.D. on the 3 credit score companies. The only down side is, you have to have 2 I.D.'s when you apply for credit, but it's a small price to pay.

same here ...still waiting for 2011 refund ... happens a lot.. cost the gov. a lot of money too!!

  10. I feel ya. I had my indenity stolen back in the early part of this century. I discovered that I had been applying for credit in Ohio like 20 times in one day and I have current adresses all over the metro here. In Missouri they won't even file a report if you donot physically loose money.

No one has filed taxes on mine yet. I hope you get it sorted out.

Mine was stolen in mid 1989, they caught the guy before he did some real damage. Luckily for me, this was before the internet really caught on. The only reason I found out about it was thru a call from a detective in the LA area. He opened 2 accounts and only used one of them for something small. At that time I told the officer that if need be, I would fly out there and testify (not a big deal since I work for an airline). Everthing was resolved very easy for me. I think ID theft is one of the worst crimes out there. Good luck

    1) Please explain further.

    2) To be proactive (i don't know if this will work for anyone who already has their iden***y taken) would be to do a "credit freeze."

This is one of the better moves i have made in life---and i don't make good moves in life.

You know, just yesterday I had this phone call, They said it was the Consumer Opt Out Agency, if you wanted your name removed to push 1, so I did. Next they ask you to either speak or type in your entire social number. Yeah right, like I am that stupid. Knowing most times even legit stuff only needs your last 4 digits. Makes me wonder how many older or unknowing people fall for it.

Here's that number guys, watch for it. I Googled it and lots of people recieving the call.

SSN was supposed to be unique, and not to be used for identification... my how things have changed. The IRS makes it too easy for thieves.

Steal my iden***y, I wouldn't like that, and if I find you I'll take away all you've got, and all you're ever gonna have.

Not making light of your situation tlmartin, but I always chuckle because when my Dad was a mechanic all the guys used to etch their SSN on all their tools. Who'd have thought someday that with a number and your name someone could f*ck up you're whole life?

  21. I had a similar situation last year. I had big plans for my tax return but never got it because there were discrepancies with my SSN. The IRS was of no help and neither was the company who filed my taxes. What a joke.
