  4. OK, all you creative types out there! Hook one of these up to an electric alarm clock and sit it by the bed. When morning comes you'd wake up to the scream of this little monster. Nitro would be even better and no snooze button either - it would just keep up that wicked idle and blasts from the zoomies until you woke up, which shouldn't take long. Might just want to stay in bed a little longer to listen to the music.

  10. People with these skills, patience, and ambition are truly amazing. Hats off to Mr. Conley.

And I thought I had too much time on my hands. These things are really cool but pretty much useless. Now if it was on a remote controlled drag boat or something that would be cool.

    i would have to agree.

But he, this Conley person, has talent. So this get's me to thinking: He most probably could make a 1/2 size sbc. This then goes along the lines of thinking:

What are the inherent advantages/disadvantages to a 175 inch v-8 vs. a comparable sized 4 cyl, also around 175 inches?

  14. Advantages: greater valve area, lower piston speed/acc, greater rpm, higher output

Disadvantages: size, weight, complexity/component count, cost

The reason, to me, this engine is a form of masturbation is that it does nothing. It has no function and it breaks no new ground. Yawn.

Sure the guy has talent but he also has tons of time on his hands that could be put to good use elsewhere. Is he in prison perhaps?

A lot of art is junk. But, even not-so-good art has a purpose that this engine doesn't fulfill. There just isn't any artistry in it. Saying "I wonder if I could make a small scale engine that runs" and then doing it is not art. It would maybe be a work of art if it were breaking new ground or being particularly creative. But where's the creativity?

Let's call the Mona Lisa 'art'. A guy faithfully copying the Mona Lisa...not so much. A guy copying it at 1/2 scale? Still not so much.

I seen it before but I still have to watch it a couple times!

  20. It's a mad little bastard that's for sure.

    Cool...

  21. 1. The Conley is not a copy of any existing engine.

    2. Obviously, miniatures are not mere copies. A miniature is an art in itself-- i.e. the art of miniature.

    3. All representational art is a copy of something. The Mona Lisa is a copy of a woman's face.

    4. The creativity in this project is in the engineering and problem-solving. A machinist will see plenty of artistry and creativity here.

That is simply amazing! I'd love to see this put to use in a scaled down gasser, hint hint. Maybe a 41 willys pickup, or a 37 chevy coupe? It would be a great fairgrounds cruiser.

I assume the same would apply to 32 Ford hot rods? Kinda puts the Oakland Roadster Show into prospective don't it?

Um, so hundred year old cars that required thousands of hours of work are "useful" "art"? Remember, good art asks more questions than it answers! Everyone that's commented here was compelled to react, another definition of "art". As a professional artist with only basic machine shop skills I can say without a doubt that A LOT of ARTISTRY is on display here. Tiniest serpentine belt?! Come on! Whether or not any new ground is being broken is irrelevant. Engaging in a traditional craft requires training, practice, patience and talent, wether it's figure drawing with pencils or painting with oil or sculpting steel with machines. Some times you're not trying to set the world on it's ear, just paying homage to something bigger than yourself!

Old cars may or may not be art but more importantly they are something useful. You can get in a car and drive somewhere. They perform a useful function. That little engine doesn't . Moreover, I'll bet if you did try to apply it to some actual work it would not last long. It's widget. It's something you show your friends when they come over and everyone loves it then in 15 minutes they are back to watching the football game.

The last time I checked, the Mona Lisa has no useful function either. Please try a better argument.
