GPS based speedometer sensors, anyone admit to using one?

Looking at putting new gauges in my truck while I rewire it. Looking at some of the electronic speedometers and the GPS sending units. Might be nice to have an accurate reading no matter swapping gears or tires, and not having to run a mechanical cable out and through the firewall.

Anyone running them or have any input about them?

Specifically looking at the one from Jegs, seems to be adaptable to most units and at a better price than a lot of the "name" branded ones..

I was looking at the autometer one on the hamb homepage today. I'm kind of curious about them as well.

 

I just read about them the other night, so I downloaded an app to my phone. It works really well. I knew my speedo was off about 5mph around town, but I didn't know it got worse the faster I went. 63 is 75. I wouldn't have a problem buying a GPS speedo for the dash. It would sure make it easy.

I wouldn't hesitat to get one if i wasn't already set up electronically. besaides only you and whoever you tell will know

Does the GPS also work as a locator if the car is stolen?

 

Nope. None that I've seen. That's not a trivial add on, by the way. GPS is a one way protocol- satellites to reciever. For the reciever to call out it's location it would need a GSM/GPRS module and antenna- and then access to the cell phone network via a monthly bill. That gets pretty spendy.

The speedo never worked in my '30 so I just went with the flow. I recently got a speedometer app on my phone and it works great. I need to fashion a mount for the phone that isn't to ugly.

 

A mate has one that plugs in to 12v and you stick on the dash, not traditional, but is accurate and just throw it in the glove box when you get somewhere. My state is happy to book you if you creep up above the limit.

 

I have been thinking of getting the one offered by Dakota Digital. A little pricey though!

I have the one from Classic Instruments made by a third party. Put the unit under the package tray on a 39 coupe....works great. Calibration requires you to depress a button on the sender/antenna unit while you watch speedo...so you have to have a plan to calibrate it...single person cal is much easier than two people because of reaction time. Unit is MUCH better than the cell phone apps....most of them suck when you compare them to a real GPS reading (like an Escort Radar detector speed indicator). The GPS speedo really helps since you dont have to run a cable out of the transmission. IT automatically compensates for tire changes, etc. Dont ask about tunnels, there are no radar units inside tunnels because of the safety hazard of such. My package tray is upholstered in leather and the GPS antenna is under it and it works great.

The GPS unit puts out a pulse string that is acceptable by an electronic pulse type speedometers. The GPS unit replaces the pulse generator....so there is NOT a location coordinate output....no display of location, etc......only a pulse string. In calibration mode, the unit calibrates to an equvalent of 50 mph (if I remember correctly) so you hold your cal in until the speedo reads 50 mph....the only trick is to let the button up at the right time.

 

just picked up new auto meter guages and the compatible GPS unit from golden rodtronics here in denver,i am going to hopefully install it all in the next few weeks,i will let you know how it works out,

 

I'm thinking about getting one to signal my Classic Instruments speedo because I plan on using my quick change rear and don't want to have to reclaibrate the speedo every time I do.

 

I've got a Speedhut in my not quite completed '31 "A" roadster. Still a bit unsure how I'm gonna mount the antenna so that it will pick up the satellite and still be outta the weather if I get caught out in the rain.
Thinking of a black plastic box (the car's black)) mounted someplace behind and between the bucket seats.

 

Got mine from Classic Instruments. It works great and I really like the fact that it will compensate for tire/gear changes.

 

A lot easier to set up a correction when changing gears or tire size. Just my experience.

 

I just installed " SPEEDHUT " Guages with 2 5/8" GPS Speedo in my 29 Pickup, mounted the eye under the dashrail on the lower lip of the Windshield frame,the eye is looking out the windshield and I am more than pleased with the performance,the GPS Eye is very small=easily concealed

 

Dave Mc, Iappreciate your input on sensor location, and the pic, but even opening up the pic to max, I'm still unsure of where it is located. Can you give me a hint or two?

Tells ya' time, direction of travel, alttitude, 0-60 time n' distance, 1/4 mile time, top speed recall and it's gotta' odometer, too.

My 2 5/8" Small GPS Speedo doe'snt have any of those options just gives accurate speed, the 3 3/8" unit has all those features, My 29 Dash insert is not big enough to squeeze the larger unit in.

 

I run a speed hut GPS speedo on my lambretta's and the sensor is behind the aluminium nose cone/horn cast . It works fantastic

The sensor is behind the aluminium casing between front mudguard and headlight, it picks up satellites fine.

Cool, good to hear that everyone seems to like them. I went ahead and ordered my gauge set from speedway today. next paycheck is going to jegs for some fuel fittings and now the gps sending unit. A lot of work to get rid of a speedo cable, but not having to fuss with recalibrations and such really wounds nice

 

I assume it'll work great since the free ap I got on my iPhone is spot on to a new Hondas speedo. I don't know if they offer it in a dial type face though? Wouldn't necessarily look traditional..
