Malibu burning as it does from time to time.

When I was a little kid my dad took me fishing frequently from Paradise Cove. I knew you couldn't really fall through the spaces between the pier's planks, but to a six year old seeing the water down through the pier was kinda scary!

Okay, HAMB taxi experts, what's the car Mary is leaning out of? Obviously,
it's not one of the Checker drop-backs. Did, maybe, DeSoto start making their
    so-called "California Taxi" this early???

Here is the story of the restoration, photos, and current status of the car:

  10. Also looks like most of the cast from It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

  11. DeSoto started providing cars for taxis in 1935, I believe. That one looks like a '36 DeSoto to me.

PercBoy, that's hilarious, but GREAT historical info, man! :D You mind if I post it over on the HAMB "Lost Drive-Ins" thread with credit to you for dredging it up?

Awesome, Dodger. I guess that's why you have the MoPar handle, right?

  14. Actually, it's because I own two 1931 Dodge business coupes, but I do have an extensive background around early MoPars. And the thing about the "sound through your radiator"....most cars of the day had very little insulation in the engine compartment, so sound (and wind & heat) passed through the hood and firewall like it would through a tunnel. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't produce a low, mellow sound for the movies.

Thanks, Dodger. So, do you think (maybe?) that sound system involved folks simply PULLING UP TO a fixed speaker on a post or pole:confused:, as opposed to the later window-mounted speakers? I don't know, so this is fascinating historical stuff, at least for me. Thanks again! :)

  16. Jimi...I think that is EXACTLY how it used to work.....until folks kept running into them or until the designs of the front ends of the cars no longer worked that way. In any case, I'm sure that method of sound didn't last very long.

Yeah, Dodger, that makes sense. Having worked at a drive-in theater as a teen, I know first-hand that what can go wrong WILL.:p LOL. In the '60s (even though signs, plus announcements on the screen, said please hang up the speaker before departing the theater), sleepy people inevitably drove off, ripping off the speaker and, probably, often breaking their driver's window. Nobody owned up, so I imagine they were just too embarrassed! :D I often found the speaks on the ground.

The guy in the captains hat is Milton Berle, Peter Faulk, and Rochester(the cabbies) and Spencer Tracy.

Yep, but not Tommy Sands, it's Dick Shawn.

  27. The guy who owned this car when I last saw it had installed 1963 Riviera taillights in the tail panel and removed the "gunsights" from the tops of the fenders. I would not have done that to a one of a kind car like this one.

In my haste, I missed Dick Shawn, here are some shots from the movie, (Lenny Pike), my inspiration to build a 53 Ford cabover, with a box!
