I left Pgh,Pa. 21 yrs ago and at that time there were several streets still paved with the wood blocks, and still in very good condition. Back then they used wood blocks or bricks for paving(Indy was called the brick yard) Paved roads were still a new thing and were not always done as we do today. If the surface got bad, they simply dug up the section needing repair and reset the blocks or bricks and no paving machine was needed,or none was available. Labor was cheep and men would be glad to have work to feed the family. I also saw many shops & factorys having wood block floors. Iceman

A picture from Muskogee, Oklahoma. Yes, the same place as the song.... This pond is still there in Honor Heights Park, the home of the Azalea Festival in the spring. [IMG]

Some pictures from my wife's alma mater, Bacone College which is on the east side of Muskogee. It is a predominately Native American college. She is Cherokee, but had roommates who were Seminole, Paiute, Mohawk, Sioux and Navaho along with other tribes.

The first pic is from Bacone's website, the last two from an Oklahoma State University website.

Mart, I may have a real goodie for you. If I can make some good stills from a 1954 movie titled Yo No Creo en los Hombres, starring the lovely Sarita Montiel, I'll post 'em soon.

In the meantime, got a few more. Just found this old clipping (damaged but I fixed what I could) from the Chicago Daily News of a Henry - uh, Horsey J:

Now for you Gone in 60 Seconds fans:

Anyone know more about this? Looks like maybe a live promotion for the movie; could this be at Ascot?

Not much info on these kids (photo came from Pasadena flea market, sign in b.g. says West 130th St.) but they were a cute couple:

That stone shield pegs "Pretty blue eyes" as a '52 Dodge or Plymouth. More to come...

I hope no prominent politicians are traumatized by the sight of all those "assault weapons".

  17. There are - or used to be - many roads that had either logs or rough sawn lumber on them. In Michigan wood was used to cover swamps, bogs or muddy areas. We have one close by and although the wood is long gone it still retains its name - Old Plank Road.
