The Fish Inn of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

We have a post filled with photos and information all about the Fish Inn and also photos of an incredible model that scrubba a H.A.M.B. member has constructed. See both on The Old Motor.

Trusting my first impression: When I first saw it, I thought, "Gunsmith in his little shop." Lots of what appear to be mostly well-used, well-worn hunting guns.

But I could be wrong. Maybe he was the smith for a Colombian cartel.:D

I couldn't help laughing a few days ago when people were turned off
by the photo of the butcher shop prominently advertising that they had
plenty of HORSE MEAT available during WWII. My Dad and Mom both
talked about how severely MANY things were rationed during the war,
beef included. So, horse meat was one of the few alternatives, as far as
red meat goes. And is horse meat ever RED! No food coloring needed!

Anybody notice the standee on the counter above, asking housewives to
save cooking grease for EXPLOSIVES? But for the sake of order, many
stores only collected cans (I suppose, often big coffee cans) of fats only
on specific days. Saturday was often an exception, because that was a
busy day at the grocery, what with country folk making their weekly trip
to town for provisions. Funny story (not mine): I remember hearing an
old fella talking about the rationing years and all the salvage drives. He
said their local grocery had a sign posted in the front window that read,

"LADIES, PLEASE DON'T
BRING YOUR
FAT CANS
IN ON SATURDAY!"

Does anybody know any details concerning this rather unusual custom?

Winter in New York City, 1957

Someone should have checked the weather report before she got dressed in the morning! Kitty Dolan, the 1957 "Outdoor Fun Queen" of Palisades Amusement Park, doesn't seem to be having too much fun as she stands outside in the cold near the Belmont Plaza Hotel

Rather than brave public transportation on an icy day in New York City, a family heads down Park Avenue via dog sled during the winter of 1947.

A freak snowstorm in 1936 leaves passengers stuck in Times Square after a frozen switch brings streetcars to a screeching halt.

Tired of shoveling snow, Sergt. Robert G. Evraets uses a flame thrower to clear a path through the frozen Governors Island.

San Francisco Mayor Roger Lapham in 1947, testing the city's first parking meter. The city is now taking its parking system into the 21st century.
