I don't think there is any worry about the consensus. The truly scary part is that the "builder" still believes the work is OK??????????? The excuses would be amusing if it wasn't so downright scary. Among other things the tyres were flat when delivered because the widened rims wouldn't hold air....one lug nut oughta do it......who needs cable fasteners........3" ground clearance on the interesting exhaust set up......IS that actually a brake fluid reservoir?????
But this thread could go on rehashing the same old thing we've seen many times before. And I have seen a LOT worse over here - and the whole r%#@rod thing seems to still be building momentum in SA. SO how the hell does it ever get any better, or should we resign ourselves to allowing them to walk among us??
Sounds like you folks need some "self policing" among car enthusiasts, otherwise a few road fatalities will lead to "no modifications to vehicle" laws and that'll be the end of your sport. The car owner is worse than the 'craftsman' if he accepted and paid for this crap as he's accepting this as a standard.
I honestly believe this is a criminal offense. I would think that my 16 year old granddaughter with about a hours worth of guidance could weld better than with I see in the photos. As for being a professional,,no doubt about it,,he is a professional rip off artist. HRP
Had a guy at work that welded. Called him "blueberry Bill" but this looks way worse. How can anyone let this kind of work go out their door.? Totally stupid workmanship.
Looks like some of the stuff that first day welding students turned out in my former coworkers AG welding class. Pretty obviously done by someone with very little welding skill or talent in that department. It kind of resembles what we saw in the early 70's on cars that had major work done on them without taking the body off the chassis because the person building the car argued that you would never get the body to fit right again if you took it off the chassis. A few of the guys in Central Texas will remember when that was a big controversy.
The question I most wanted answered was "What made you send your car to the guy in the first place?" His answer was that he seemed to know what he was talking about, had a shop full of cars (not junkers) and 'got' the concept. I think probably the TV show thing played a big role too. My guy lives a 1000 miles away and sent this truck down to have it done. So he wasn't around to see what was happening. Sure he should have asked for more detailed photos etc, but if the talk sold it to begin with, that would probably hold for a while. The stories about issues on other cars are coming out thick and fast now.... The sad part is he could have done a MUCH better job himself, but trusted someone who he thought knew better. Go figure.
I've been singing that tune for years......most people seem to think I am just knocking other people in the game. I am not very popular because of it, though I try not to get personal with it unless there is something very specific and downright scary. Kinda want to give up on that and just keep my head down and do my own thing. Frustrating as all hell seeing shit like this, and that it becomes the standard or somehow acceptable because it seems so pervasive....

I see those type of welds all the time at car events. They are death traps, maybe not today or maybe not tomorrow but one day someone will get killed
That work would never get past "tech inspection" at any track and is a gernade withthe pin pulled. When i was a pup (1968) I bought a T Bucket witha 331 Caddy La Sallle trans and NO driveshaft so short the tailshaft mated to the rear end. The steering was Craftsman socket extensions and a swivel welded. No fton brakes harley wires. Keep it hidden when My Dad saw me and it at Bob's in Glendale he wanted to drive it (he was a real old time rodder)...never saw that car again. Many years later two days before he died I asked him about it, "Sorry son that car was going to kill you so I had it crushed" That and my MG with the 289 the pictured truck whould be redone or crushed UNSAFE
Well I have been on the HAMB long enough to know that if you are a printer repairman, have scabbed together a rat rod, and loose your job you have just become a professional builder. Unfortunately the recession has brought every hack and their mom as shop owners and professional builders. I agree that everyone needs to earn a living but it is a damned shame hat everyone thinks that being unemployed makes them a professional builder. On the original question I am not shure what I am supposed to be judging but what I have seen of what was done is a little slip shod or looks that way to me.

I find this an interesting statement. I have shared a similar experience. I worked for awhile at a shop that, god knows how, is known as one of the top AMC restoration shops around. The crap work I saw go on there was truely sad, and now I watch as the entry level cars I worked on get bragged up as some of the "best in the nation". Now I sit here hoping that any potential purchasers of those cars have the common sense to look under them before plopping down their cash. Problem is, blowing the whistle puts you at risk for ever getting work in the industry again. Most people think you a bitter ex-employee, and everyone knows that workers "never leave a job over the place doing crap work". I'd love to say "drag their name through the mud", but, after seeing how many people turn on someone who does that, I can understand why it doesn't happen more often.
Between that car and that guy with no legs shooting his girl you guys are having a tough time over there. Whats next?
