I took a look at his website thinking I would love to own one. But they start at $5600

    Owned, hahahaha.

  5. There are engine makers who sell kits and drawings for less -- but these require considerably more work, naturally.

  6. Well put. I think this is part of what the HAMB celebrates.

  7. The builder also offers a quarter-scale T bucket and is nearing completion on a '34 Ford roadster.

    One word...SWEET!!!

An awesome display of engineering and machining skill.

Art? Absolutely...and it sounds way cool!

As an expert in this practice, in the figurative sense, i feel i must "defend" "masturbation."

If we can agree that if you make money while doing something then it's not "masturbation," then everything else IS masturbation. Some guys like to go fishing some people like watching (too much) TV---all "masturbation" in my opinion. Some non-car people think messing with cars is jerking off. i know people who play video games---doesnt do anything for me i think it's wacking off, but they do enjoy it so it works for them.

i feel that if a person gets enjoyment out of a hobby and it is legal then it's all good regardless of the degree of perceived "masturbation" involved. i mean those civil war re-enactment buffs---more power to them!

    2) Could this engine power a small generator thus providing back-up or even economical full-time power? i'm thinking yes. Masturbators 1, doubters 0

P.S. IF the average lawnmower engine is 9 CID and makes 4 lbs of torque, then i'd like to say that this engine, with blower, also makes 4lbs of torque and probably 3 hp.

i feel we should re-steer the discussion this way.

  13. Seems odd that we should have to justify a project on the grounds of practicality, of all things. This is a hot rodding forum. Since when are hot rods intended to be practical?

EXACTAMUNDO! (Well, in the case of if it wins an NHRA championship and earns millions of dollars........then i guess it would be "practical".....)

Again, is any non-commercial/non-employment activity really "practical"/"impractical?"; Sewing, playing golf, watching tv, sitting in front of the computer, going to the movies on fri night etc. Who is to say?

If you are doing something you really like (hopefully with people who really love you) then it's all good.

i'm planning on building an engine soon. It will probably run at least 5K to 8K minimum. i should put that money into municipal bonds, but i'm not going to because cars are my life. Some people would say this is impractical. But you have to do what you have to do.

  15. If you liked the engine, this will blow you away.

Ernie Adams, one of the pioneers of the dwarf aka legends race car movement in the USA, also builds these dwarf road cars from scratch. Here's one of his most recent, an unbelievable miniature '49 Merc. The story includes video and some unique fabrication techniques. LINK:

Also be sure to follow the links to his website and facebook page -- more fantastic material there.

  16. So true. Even building an engine -- these days, crate engines are cheaper and in many cases, better. But building your own is so satisfying.

i think we should get back to the engine itself, rather then the psychology of why anyone does anything, although that is interesting too. (i mean going to the moon could be considered one big wank--especially financially)

So, anyways, i feel the engine with blower could produce at least 4lbs of torque if a 9 cubic inch lawnmower can also produce 4lbs of torque. If we tie this in with the mini-cars pictured above, then this engine could very possibly power a go cart. An interesting go kart at that.......

Tubman, I was an avid reader of Carl Kohler's writings,.... In both automotive and electronice publications !

  19. I think that is a very reasonable estimate -- given, for example, the output of 100cc normally-aspirated kart engines.

We got Cabin Fever coming up in April guys, likely that engine and tons of others will be there. It is in York PA, well worth a long drive. It lasts 3 days.

What a miserable black and white life you must lead. Your garage must have NOTHING but functional tools and machines, right? No old testers, gas pumps or parts, old toys, old broken car parts too cool to throw away? Got a dog? A cat? I hear there's a sale on Haterade at Walmart. Go get some and leave the rest of us alone.

As usual, thanks Bill. Kool stuff, and I spelled it with a "K" just for GregCon!

I'm not sure how to calculate the output based on the available info, but by some clever TQ multiplication and a light wt chassis, it would be awesome in a radio controlled FED. Imagine 2 of those putting on a show at the next nat'l event. Would our buddy accept that as function? I would...

(Oh jeeez; i guess we WILL get back into the psychology of it)

My intent was not to directly criticize GregCon because on one hand i actually agree mostly:

    a) The average lawnmower engine can do the same work this engine could---if it were going to be used in an application---AND be much cheaper. AND would be less time consuming to apply.

    b) Unfortunately, i would have to agree that the durability of the engine could very well be in question as the large factories such as Briggs and Stratton have done millions in Research and development, metalurgy, lubrication etc. While we don't know what has gone into the little buddy.

    c) It does make you wonder what is the point?

However, my view is if it makes you happy (and it's legal, moral, ethical etc) then it's all good.

Example: If you are having sex without the intent to conceive---then what is the point? Exactly.

Example 2: Some people spend thousands of $$$$ and countless hours (more $$$) to build a car and then only drive it a few hundred miles per year and/or trailer it to shows. Is this not wanking?

So, i would say both sides are right; We need to continually have an income--you know your health does not last forever. But at the same token we need to have a continuous "income of happiness" as well.

i think i'd better leave this thread as i don't think it's serving any purpose to me anymore (wanking).

    P.S.

Why go fishing when it is likely that going to the grocery store or McDonalds is much cheaper and easier and more practical?

What if you are fishing with someone you really love? Some of us don't have that---maybe that's what the controversy is really about?
