Finally back on track:)! Still alot of snow, but spring is right around the corner. We was very pleased after todays workshop;)
Next up is for me to grind the portholes smooth and to match the block.
Roger is gona make a 1 1/2" tall plenum with the pop-off/burstpanel pointing forward this time:)
After we have fitted the plenum, we'r gona make the bracket for the blower-belt tensioner. We also need to make some supports for it and for the plenum. Last is to make holes for oil filler and breathers.

  6. Hey Kjell, I know I'm late to the party on your design . . . but you may think about more of a 'cross ram' design to get the port tubes at a better angle to the ports. Right now, the flow has to make a hell of a bend at the bottom (which may work out fine) . . . just thinking out loud!

Here is a Tom Roberts Design that I have a copy of:

Dale, we was thinking of making a cross-flow design, but ended up with this design. I think the Roberts design would be perfect if we ran gas or with a longer blower. As the output area of the blower are fairly small on the 4-71, the distance to the corner ports are fairly long. As Alky is rather heavy, our theory is that it's more important to have the ports evenly/ eaqual lenght.
The alcohol tends to build up droplets on sharp edges, or drop down to the bottom of the intake, making it harder to mix with the air. If we would consider pops, even heavyer stuff, this is even more critical.
The size of the runners matches the port holes in the block, making them rather large. As you can see the runners points innward in both directions.
I know we have one sharp turn, but other intakes has more turns.
But we are goma smoth out the sharp turn a litle bit, we did hammer a small bend on the end, and rounding off the bottom plate will help abit.
This is all theory, but we hope it will work, or we have to try the Roberts design:) The Roberts design with port nozzles would be an option.
Very interesting information in the .pdf:)
But for this time we'r gona try out the "Riser";)
Even if I don't know their excact design, when I shared my idea with a record breaking Flathead team (ET. 8.23 sec), I got the "thumbs up":)
And with the raised blower, it would be moore space for the 4th exhaust port. I think we evne can take the Baron heads off without any obstacle:)

  8. Sounds like you have a good plan! You might consider putting down-nozzles in the individual ports . . . to get even fuel distribution. We're doing this on the FlatCad as part of our switch over to alcohol and nitro (small percentage). Since you're in the middle of building your manifold, might as well put the port nozzle bungs in at this point. I'd put them as close to the bottom as possible and have them blow down the port if you can (use Enderle nozzles with the spray deflectors).

Best of luck - can't wait to hear it run!

    Thanks guys:)

Now we have done some progress:)
Roger has welded the plenum, so now it's my turn to do some grinding!:)
    And of also some polishing:)
We will also do as Dale recomends, make provitions for port nozzles when we are at it:)

Looks good Kjell , I have to admit, I've been spying on your intake build as Dale told you about the port nozzels , I beefed up spots on the bottom of my runners for port nozzels also made sense to get the fuel to the right cylinders , Tim Jones

Thanks Tim:) Spy on me!? Thats fine:) I spy on the HAMB:D!

Had my friend visit, so we changed King pinns on the 49, so now I'll sell that one:eek:! Don't have the time for it, so I pass it to someone else.

Tomorrow it's back to the intake.......:)

    Looks great Kjell!

Be careful depending on port nozzles- many experienced racers have actually experienced HP loss with them. After talking to a lot of people about the pros and cons, we decided against them!

    See you in August!

Alcohol burns as liquid- not a vapor so you droplet theory has no merit.
Port nozzles are not worth the effort unless you need volume or you are trying to even cyl temps. One has to run fuel thru the blower to kool-seal-lubricate before it reaches the plenum anyway so adding a little more fuel to the hat to make power is no big deal, the motor will injest what it needs. By running port nozzles you are putting up a curtin of fuel that is taking away air volume to the runner.

Thanks for the input Buddy, as you was considering port nozzles, we also whent Ahead making provitions for them. But we will see if it's any point.:)
When do do think you'r gona have the Flatcad on the dyno again?

Thanks for Your advice dreracecar:) I'm still Learning, and I have gotten a lot of pros and cons about the port nozzles. I know it's important to cool and lubricate the blower. But I think the Flathead design requires a little different thinking!? To explain, the old intake shoved us that the fuel distribution is curtail, and small changes on the set-up made big differences. With the port design, four and four ports far away from each other it's hard to get equal fuel distribution. With our new intake, we hope this will be a lot better, but if not, we think tuning with port nozzles might help.
Our idea is to run the primary volume of fuel through the hat, and just add a little through the port nozzles if it's necessary!?:)
I know that the Alcohol burns as liquid, but with the L-shape combustion, I still think it's better to atomize the fuel!?
Hpoe this makes any sence :)
    Thanks again for you advice:)

After Roger did some welding AGAIN:D! I finally got something done today:)! Did what I do best, grind, grind, grind....!
Now I just have to go down to Roger for some finish welding:D!
We are really optimistic about this intake!?

Looks Good Kjell , It looks like it weighs as much as mine:D, I'm still doing some grinding on mine , Good thing you posted the pics , Reminded me I need to add an oil fill tube:eek: at least that's an easy fix,, Tim Jones

Thanks guys:) We sure hope it will perform!? And with a right size spoole in the barrel-valve, the right set-up on the Hilborn, and correct advance on the magneto, about 20 degrees off last time. The Sidewinder will fly.......;)!?

And Tim, don't forget the crank and valvetrain ventilation!:)

Looks like we are getting closer to fire up the "killer" again:)
Got the intake back from Roger yesterday, and on the way home I swung by my friends garage to mock up the intake and see if it fitted.
Today I managed to do final grinding and polishing:).
Also got to make a new intake gasket, and hope it will hold the pressure.
We hope to start mounting the engine back together this week.
